It had been nearly a decade since I last saw this man. He almost didn't exist to me anymore because so much time had gone past and I had achieved so much without him. I achieved more then I could ever comprehend and God knew that if I was still under his roof, I wouldn't have achieved half of that.

I buried Robert Jefferson and the old Jada Nicole Jefferson when I bought a one way ticket and never looked back.

But here he was.

In the flesh.

Sat in my dining room, eating my food, smiling, laughing, talking like nothing happened.

He finally found me.

"Jada, mind getting me some more collard greens? You know how I love the way you make them." Robert said, almost mockingly, but he hid it with a sick smirk on his face, sat on my furniture, all high and mighty. And of course, my kids ate it up. I didn't blame them. They were separated from their father for so long, they were probably so happy.

So I tried to play happy family for the time being.

Just for the sake of them.

I stood up from my seat, reaching for the collard greens and I served him some more on his plate.

"I can't believe you're here, for real, pops." Treyvon smiled widely, starting to dig into his food.

"I can't believe I'm here either, Trey. I just... I wish things were different. I'm sorry I wasn't around while growing up, son. Your mother and I... we had our differences. But we're back for good now." Robert said and I couldn't help but scoff under my breath at his effrontery but I never audibly expressed my discontent. I just kept quiet.

Treyvon smiled, believing all his father's empty promises.

Silence ensued the table and Destiny took it upon herself to bring life back into the conversation.

"Daddy, I auditioned to be Annie at my school. Mom is also running to be PTA president too." Destiny grinned and Robert let out an animated 'wow'.

"Wow, my daughter is an actress? I've missed out on a lot. Ya'll are gonna have to catch me up. Maybe we can go out tomorrow, for some food, the beach and then... maybe... see the Lakers!!" Robert hooted, smiling widely as he pulled out his tickets from his jacket and Treyvon immediately shot up from his seat, his eyes widened while Destiny was clapping her hands excitedly.

"Don't fuck with me." Treyvon tilted his head at his father, in disbelief at the tickets.

"Am I the type of man to fuck with this kind of thing? It's the real deal. Four front row seat tickets." Robert laid the tickets flat on the table and though Destiny and Treyvon were excited, I remained stoic faced, just eating my meal quietly. I began to wonder what on earth Robert did to get the money to buy those tickets but God knows that man didn't have four hundred dollars lying about to just waste on Laker tickets.
