[A WEEEK LATER]Despite countless times disinfecting my hands with bacterial gel on the way here, my hands still had traces of hair grease on them from working earlier this morning, until I got a sudden urgent call from Destiny's middle school asking for me to come in.
I asked Mary to hold down the salon for the few hours I would be gone, already knowing what this was about because Destiny was an honorary student and she would always forget to tell me about events where she would get rewarded with academic trophies and certificates for her excellence in whatever subject.
However considering it was the summer vacation and school was out, I couldn't help but wonder what this reward would be for. Maybe it was for her participation in the summer showcase auditions? Or what if she actually got the part of Annie? Though shortlisting was supposed to happen a week from now, I wouldn't be surprised if they just wanted to alert us before the unfortunate hopefuls who didn't manage to get the part.
Forcing smiles at the summer camp teachers as I walked past, they greeted me, most having an idea of who I was because my daughter was Destiny Jefferson and my son was Treyvon Jefferson— both children making me known for completely different reasons.
When Trey was a senior and Destiny was in the seventh grade, I was called in at the same time to collect a science reward on Destiny's behalf as well as collect my son whom purposefully set a rat free in his class and sent his history teacher into cardiac arrest.
Thankfully, his history teacher, Mrs Delarosa, survived and she thoroughly appreciated the gift basket I sent her as well as Trey's in depth 2000 word letter of his admission of guilt.
Knocking on the principal's office door, I finally heard a 'come in' and seated in her usual desk was Principal Delgado. She was a gorgeous white hispanic lady, with dark brown eyes and bouncing blond curls. Unlike her devil incarnate of a subordinate, Vice Principal Harris who had suspended Trey about six times in one semester, Principal Delgado was more understanding and tried her best to understand every child's needs.
I think she was one of the main reasons I decided to let Destiny school here after Trey's terrible experience at this school. Despite Nevaeh and her headless clique of sheeps and VP Harris' vendetta against Trey, Principal Delgado made it somewhat bearable.
"Don't tell me— she got Annie, right? I knew it." I walked into the office and spotted Destiny already seated. Chuckling and smiling, I took a seat right next to Destiny, feeling very proud of her considering it's been a rough couple of days with her father starting treatment and just adjusting to him living in the house now.
I mostly distracted myself by working overtime and trying not to be at home as often. I hardly saw the kids nowadays nor Robert nowadays, I would just wake up early at like 5 in the morning, make sure dinner is planned and cooked beforehand, once I'm done cooking go to work by 8 in the morning, work till like 8 in the evening and then come home to sleep. And the cycle would repeat. I hadn't spoken to JK either. Nor have I seen him. I would hear that Trey would go out with him sometimes but that's it.
