CHAPTER 14
The darkness I had welcomed with open arms was interrupted by the streak of sunlight that pierced through the thick curtains. My eyes burned, head throbbing. Leaning over, I turned on the lamp sitting on the table next to the bed. The moment I did, the breath I hoped left last night, was stuck in my throat. This wasn't my room. How did I get there? Why am I not...?
"Hey, you're awake," Jaxson walked in holding a cup of water, slowly yet cautiously. "Here."
I took the water from him. "Thank you."
"You alright?" he asked, concerned.
"Why?" It was the only question that came to mind. I had to bite the bullet and ask. There must've been a reason for him to keep me here.
When his brows furrowed, his eyes followed in confusion. "What do you mean?"
"Why did you save me?" I asked more forwardly. "Why didn't you let me go?"
"And let you leave me here alone? I can't do that, little cousin."
"Jaxson, you have your parents, your security team, your friends, and your company staff. You're better off without me," Although it hurt, it was the truth. At this rate, I was done holding people back. My suffering wasn't their concern and yet they're here for me. I mean, I'm not important. It's not like anyone would see me as a human being after they find out everything that I've gone through. If anyone knew what has happened to me truly, they would all walk away. So, it's better I take myself away first.
"Firecracker, its doesn't matter how many people I have around me. None of them understand me as much as you do," Jaxson pulled me into a hug. One hand was on the back of my head and the other on my back.
"You don't need me. No one does," It came out as a whisper, my voice as small as ever. I felt as if I was back at my parents' house again.
"That's where you're wrong, firecracker. And I'm going to show you why."
"W-what do you mean?" I asked, it was my turn to be confused.
"You rest, I'll handle the rest of this. Don't worry about the case or working. I've called your boss at Joe's and asked him to give a week off."
"WHAT?! Why would you do that? How am I going to pay the—" I stopped mid-way not wanting to reveal what I was about to say.
"You pay the mortgage, don't you?" he figured out.
I didn't say anything. Because it was the truth. I figured he had access to our legal documents, but if he didn't, I also figured that he would find out anyway. So, I nodded answering his question.
"Well, starting from today, things are going to change. Just leave it to me."
"What do you have planned?"
He broke the hug, wiping tears I didn't realize were falling. "First, how about we head out for breakfast? We'll worry about the house and the Runnels family tomorrow, alright? Just please, don't do that again. Please."
I sighed and looked away. I couldn't promise not having another moment like this. This is only a glimpse. I'm broken beyond fixing. Nothing is going to change the fact that life will always be cruel to me. Love will always be cruel to me. No one cares for me or cares that I exist.
Some say that they do, but it's all a lie. Everyone has a motive. Everyone wants something. That's why they befriend you. Then they'll leave you in the dust after they suck your energy out completely. They always do. "I'm sorry."
