CHAPTER 35
It's not fair. Those narrow gray eyes of mystery have robbed my heart of its calmness. It swelled and raced. My blood pulsating in my veins. I hate the way they make me look away even though all he did was say hi to me. It's even worse since I'm in uniform now. Why didn't have to be right now? Why did he have to come here? And with his friends for that matter?
"I didn't know you worked here?" his head tilted so his eyes were leveled with mine.
"You didn't need to know that I work here," I looked everywhere but at him. I couldn't or else all the resolve I have would come crashing down. I have to fight it no matter how awkward it makes me look. I can't let my heart get hurt again.
"So, this is the Meghan that Lucas has been telling us about," his friends stood by him, and the one that spoke held his hand out. His light, ash brown hair, flopped against his forehead. He was tall, but not as tall as Lucas was. And his skin, a beautiful rich brown. Don't get me started on his eyes too. Then I remembered, this was the guy Sami was talking about.
"I'm Kendrick," said the guy holding his hand out.
"Meghan, but you knew that already thanks to him," I took his hand and shook it.
He chuckled. "That's Vince and the quiet, emotionless guy with blonde hair who looks like he doesn't care about anything, is Aaron."
"Hey," both waved.
I turned my attention back to Lucas. "As for earlier, we aren't partners anymore. We don't have a chemistry assignment to do together if my memory serves me."
His white teeth almost flashed when he chuckled. "Come on, princess. Live a little. You can take a little joke, can you?"
My face fell flat. "No. My current situation doesn't permit me to do so. Now if you boys excuse me, I've got customers to tend to."
"Hold on, you mind showing us to a table, princess," I don't want to look at him because it'll show him how much he affects me. There's fire underneath my cheeks so bright that they turned a deep shade of pink. His voice was distinctive. I could pick it out from anywhere even with his friends talking amongst each other. None of them had the richness he had, or the smoothness he had. His voice felt like a blanket. A blanket I could lay under forever and not get tired of it.
I waved him off. "Sorry, you'll have to ask the host like everyone else. I'm just a waitress."
Without letting him speak further, I headed to the back and grabbed the order for my shift. When I headed back out to the customers, I passed Lucas' table and went to my last table which had a family of four. The parents seemed as if they were praying for the food to get here so that the kids won't get impatient and antsy. I placed all their food on the table. "Here you are, enjoy." I gave them a small smile before leaving them to dig in. "If you need anything else, call for me."
It prepared me for the dread I was going to feel when I passed by Lucas' table again heading toward the one table no one ever wants to serve and yet I get caught with that table every time I'm on schedule. There sat another family. The parents, who looked like they just finished working and two teenagers who do nothing but nag them for some new item that's trending right now. The boy looked like he was around my age, curly brown hair, a set of hazel-colored eyes. He and his father had the same square face, narrow set lips and slim nose. Whilst the girl seemed close in age, light blonde like the mother's, big round brown eyes, and she also took her father lips. I can't help but notice an old bag she had on the table. It was a beautiful navy blue with a little silver butterfly accent. It was one of the first bags I released in honor of grandpa passing at the time. He loved butterflies.
