CHAPTER 17

"When are we going to tell her?" she asked. "She's bound to find out at some point."

She hauled her large brown bag, over her shoulder, and sat on the couch next to me placing the bag in front of feet. For a while, I considered it. Telling about Marissa and me, but the time isn't right. I shouldn't tell her now. It could overshadow what's going on right now. I didn't need to make this about me and my happiness. I wasn't going to be selfish to her like that.

I slid my arm around her waist, and gently pulled toward me. "When the time's right. I don't think we should tell her right now."

She sighed as she rested her head on my shoulder. "You're right, but I feel terrible keeping her in the dark like this. She's like a little sister to me, you know?"

"I know," I planted a gentle kiss on her head. "I know, I do too. When all this is over, we'll tell her together, alright, honey?"

"Copy that, hubby," She agreed with a playful chuckle that brightened my day. "Now, let's get to work."

From my bag that was resting near the coffee table, I pulled my laptop from it and placed it on the coffee table. She followed suit, taking hers out too.

"Anything on Manny," I asked. "What's the status on that?"

As she typed away, opening files but the minute she opened a particular file, it made me raise a brow and look at her. "He's been a busy, busy man."

"What's this?" I asked, looking her laptop screen.

"Well, my team pulled some strings with some people close to him and gave some very sensitive information." She explained. "This is a record of every trial that he's been involved in, the crimes he's committed, and all the lawyers that represented him."

I almost smirked, but I bit it back because I knew there was more. Manny had a lot of stuff that he hid. I'm pretty sure that Marissa and her team found whatever they needed to find to put Manny behind or maybe underneath the jail cell in solitary confinement. They wanted to play games. Now, they had the best player involved. "At this rate, this could shut him down completely."

"For the sake of Meghan, you, and I both know that you don't want to just shut him down. You want to take him out," Marissa peered with a teasing look. "You want to make sure he could never come out of the house again, let alone be able to run a business ever again."

"In all honestly, they all don't deserve their livelihoods. I'm trying to put business, houses, and bank accounts in the ground."

"Remember, you have to be careful because they could come for you too," she warned. "I can't lose you, okay?"

"Trust me," I reassured her. "I'll be extra cautious."

Knowing what she was alluding to, I knew that she was right. If I got reckless, my identity would be in jeopardy. I didn't need that to happen nor was it ever going to happen.

"Anyway, here's the other things, we were able to get on him."

I was finally able to smirk. "Send this to Aaron and Gisele. Next, let's collect evidence on the Maverick Law firm."

"Way ahead of you on that, turns out Aaron's been investigating that firm for a while. He asked me to gather some things for that too. For now, let's focus on Manny. The police are on a case with him involved anyway."

"Perfect."

I don't think either of us slept since last night. Marissa and I were working until the sun came up. She clocked out around five in the morning, but I was still on it. Slowly and as gentle as I can be, I replaced my shoulder with a pillow making sure she wouldn't wake up. After, I went over to the kitchen and started brewing some coffee. I needed it for the day we were going to have.
