Chapter 9 - Prison

My hands held her at bay by the throat. She was ten, the last time I saw her. My baby sister. Sara. She was suppose to be sixteen now. She did look older, but not as much from when I had last seen her.

My hands were shaking as she snarled at me. Her mouth kept snapping trying rip any flesh she could get to.

"No." My voice broke. "Please. Let this be fake." I cried. "Please!"

But the image of her was still there. I still could recognize her. Even after all this time.

"Sara!" I screamed. "No!"

She kept snapping at me, oblivious to anything I was saying.

In the corner of my eye, the other zombie came at me. I flipped Sara and stood up, trying to catch it. I grabbed my sword and cut it's neck. It fell back, part of it's neck bending.

I turned as Sara came at me again.

"Please!" I screamed, my voice turning into a sob. I've never felt so powerless. "This can't be real."

I dodged her letting her pass me. The zombies were pushing through the opening. They were squeezing through. Shit.

She came at me again.

A zombie got through. It ran toward me. I dodged.

Another got through. Oh god.

There was shouting and I heard people running. I dodged another zombie, while another came through. Two guys ran toward the opening and started to push it down. A third one started shooting the zombies down. I looked over and Sara was running toward the guards pushing the opening down.

My breathing sped up. "Sara!" I screamed.

But it didn't register. My eyes felt dry. My throat clenched.

I grabbed Flame and threw it at her. It hit her neck and she fell down. It ignited. She screamed and struggled. But she was a zombie now and they didn't mix well with fire. Her neck started to fall in itself.

I walked up to her slowly. I tried to swallow. "Sara." I whispered. I pulled out Flame and quickly placed it in a hoop.

Here eyes didn't focus as she stared up. She stopped struggling and stayed still. Most of her neck gone.

I fell to my knees. I killed her. A sob broke through me. "Sara." I whispered again.

Someone grabbed my arm. "We need to get away from here!" I looked up at the guard. "They are going to burn off this section."

I felt cold. I wanted to go to a corner and cry. I hadn't wanted to cry in such a long time.

He pulled me away from my baby sister.

I stared at her as we walked, backwards slowly.

The other guy was was soaking everything with a hose. Then someone threw a match. I hadn't noticed that more zombies had gotten through. They did manage to close the sewer.

Two other guards walked in front of us and started torching the place, helping the other guards. The cries of zombies, mixed with the fire blending into the night.

I looked at the light of the fire, my baby sister, burning on the floor. Oh god. This wasn't real. No.

I couldn't look away, even when there was nothing but dark black ash.

The men sighed in relief.

One of them spoke. "How the hell did this happen?"

I suppose this question was directed at me. I opened my mouth, trying to speak, but nothing came out.
