Chapter 3 The Informant -
I was trying to keep a low profile as I entered the city. In past cities, when I made myself known, I seemed to get into more trouble than imaginable. Mick and I had worked as mercenaries. We did all the dirty work, anything that needed to be taken care of. We did. There were times that the situation was too gruesome, but we had no choice. There were not so many job options now. It balance with the smaller population, I suppose. And only those of power and I’m talking extreme magical power and intelligence triumphed in the cities.
We weren’t sure how this city ran, but it was one of the big ones. We drove in the city bounds. The roads were cracked and there were parts that contained nothing but dirt. The city looked beyond.
He stopped the truck at a broken down building, more so than others. The top of the building had no roof and door. Most of the buildings were still intact, there are just mostly damaged, however, they seemed to be repairing them.
We got out and Mick headed inside. I walked slowly behind him, looking everywhere. The border of the city was deserted, but that was common for most cities. Even if it was very far from the border, there was no one that wanted to risk that, that was why Mick lived close to the forest because no one would suspect or fathom why someone would live that far from the city.
We walked inside and waited.
“What is this about?” I asked him quietly.
“An informant about the city.”
I sighed. This better be good.
He looked over at me. “I know that I use to tell you not to give to much hope, but that did not mean give up.”
“I haven’t given up.”
“You are not the same. You have turned . . . . darker or more pessimistic.”
“Gee, I wonder why. It’s been five freaking years.”
He blew out air. “I know you want to find them, but what I meant to say then was that you need to start making a life for yourself. This . . . “ He gestured around. “Is not a life.”
I stood fuming. “So what? Should I just stop this five year search!”
He shook his head. “Just don’t make it a priority.”
I glared at him, unsure on how to answer him. I couldn’t do it. I had to keep searching, at least to know that they were okay.
We heard a rustle outside and that ended our conversation. They made quite a bit of noise as they walked in. He was a small man maybe around five feet and he was incredibly filthy. His black hair was greased with so much oil and dirt that I think his hair looked black. I was not sure if that was his natural color. His skin looked an olive color and his teeth looked horrendous. I almost grabbed my sword because he looked like one of the dead.
He was breathing in and out, normally. He was human.
His dark eyes looked at us with interest and he smiled.
I did not like him.
“So you must be Dave.” Mick said.
His smile widened. “That would be me. Welcome to Athens.”
He looked me over and I got the sudden urge to grip my jacket closer. Gross.
“So you are looking for some people.”
I looked at Mick and he did not seem to be giving this man details, so there must be some reason.
Mick nodded. “Yes. Has anybody new come along here? Any family?”
