Chapter 6 - Shadow Man

He muttered things I couldn’t hear because it was too low. Yet, I got the gist of it, I was a bitch. Who knew.

“You will need to put on better clothing.” Marcus said.

I looked down at myself. I had black pants, shirt and sweater. “No.”

He let out a frustrated breath. “You have to look like you belong in the crowd.”

“Black goes with everything. I’ll be fine. Unless you want to switch places.”

He turned back to the equipment on the floor and rummaged through it. “We have to keep in touch and you must warn me if anything goes wrong.” He handed me a small ear piece. “I will come and assist you.”

I nodded and placed it in my ear. “Alright, so what’s the plan?”

He stepped closer to the edge, the coat he wore reached beyond his boots. He looked like the modern vampire characters. “We have to keep watch of any distressing situations, especially concerning women.” He grabbed the papers and looked through them. “There is a man we could speak to, but I think I will set up a meeting to ask him more in depth questions.” He kept looking at the papers for a moment. “You try asking around and meet a couple people. Try to blend in.”

I sighed. This was going to be difficult. I hated crowds. “Okay.”

“It shouldn’t be that hard.” He said absently. “For now we will keep watch until late this evening, when the club is in full activity.”

“Of course, usually that’s when the monsters tend to come out.” I said in a deep voice, trying to mock a horror movie character.

He looked up, surprised and gave me a look, probably reserved for the mentally challenged.

The pounding music and glaring lights had everyone jumping, screaming, and grinding on each other. The colors were bright pink, green, red, blue, and purple.

The club had two levels, the bottom floor contained a bar on the far wall with at least three bartenders. The drinks hanging on the back of them, quite a few of the were glowing. The dance floor was filled with people and most tables were filled. The theme colors were mostly neon mixed with black. The tables black and metallic and the seats cushions with leather.

I walked as swiftly as I could trying to go around all these people.

When I finally reached the bar a guy was grinding on me. “Keep doing that and you’ll wake up finding that you missed a whole week of your life.” I told him sweetly or I tried the sweet way.

Whoever he was stiffened and ran away. I looked back and didn’t see anyone. I think he got the hint.

I sat on one of the tall metallic stools. A bartender came up to me and I just ordered a random drink on the menu, handing him money.

He brought me a glowing green juice. I grabbed the straw and stirred it.

“Why does it glow?” I asked the bartender. He was part troll, his green and brown skin blending to look similar to the bark of a tree. I only knew that trolls had the same colored skin, texture, and the characteristics of the face. Their noses were pointed up and the nostrils flared quite large. His eyes were large and round that were pointed at the corner. Like most trolls, he had no hair.

“It is magic.” He said, his voice foreign with an accent.

“Magic in a drink?” I mused.

“Yes. It makes for better experience with the club.”

“Thanks.” I told him.

He nodded moving to the next customer.
