"Hey, I brought my umbrella!" you call out to your brother as you enter the small apartment he was given within Hogwarts and shut the door behind you. "Not sure why you want to go outside on a day like this but here you go!"
James approaches you from the kitchen and lets out a sigh of relief. "Thanks, Y/N. I still can't believe the student who never returned mine."
"Bet they used Incendio on it and would rather you think it's lost than burnt to a crisp," you chuckle as you hand him the umbrella.
"Very funny," he smirks, taking it. "But thanks. I've got a date, if you must know, and I'd rather not ruin her dress. Not on the first date anyway."
"Oh? Yes, I'm sure Professor Garlick would be rather cross if you ruined her clothes."
"That's not who I'm talking about," he says, crossing his arms and looking at you with narrowed eyes.
"Oh, no? Who is it then?"
"It's none of your business," he snaps before turning back and walking to the kitchen. "Are you hungry? I'm making lunch."
"Lunch?"
"Yes, lunch. Don't act so surprised," he replies.
"I mean, well... Okay," you shrug. "What are you cooking?"
"Spaghetti and meatballs," he tells you. "And there's some garlic bread on the counter if you want it."
"Spaghetti?" you repeat, looking at him with wide eyes. "God, I don't remember the last time we had that."
"It's not the greatest," he sighs, stirring the pot. "But it's the best I could do. I felt like making something myself instead of relying on magic to get something decent to consume."
You smile softly as you watch him. "It'll be fine. I'm sure it'll taste better than what I make."
"That's true," he chuckles.
"Hey!"
"What?" he laughs.
"I'm a better chef than you," you scoff.
"That's true. You are. Well, depending on what it is."
You roll your eyes as James serves you a plate of food before sitting across from you at the small table. The two of you then eat your meals and talk for a while. When you finish, the conversation soon shifts to a topic that James has been avoiding.
"So," he says, putting his fork down, "are you ever going to tell me how serious this thing is between you and Gaunt?"
"Well, uh, I'm not really sure," you admit as you push around a meatball with your fork. "We're friends, but he did invite me to be with him the night of the ball."
"Ugh, don't remind me of that," he grumbles. "I can't believe the Headmaster is making making me work it. I don't want to watch a bunch of kids running around and being stupid."
