Emma is now five years old and has learned a great amount of language.  She's also found her first best friend.

He had triangular, fluffy, tall, and alert ears that twitched from side to side often . . . like the poor thing was trying to hear something constantly but didn't know what he was hearing.  He'd walk around the room sniffing random places in the kitchen and when he was done with that he'd circle back around to the living room where Emma had chosen to take a nap today.

He rested his head on the edge of the couch and anxiously waited for her to wake up.  She seemed perfectly content with being sprawled out on the couch and drooling on the decorative pillows.  The dog didn't seem to mind any either but he really wanted to be on the couch too.

He sat down and kept his head on the edge of the couch, waiting for the slight movements of an awake child.  He wanted to play fetch and go for walks, and he wanted to hang out with who he could only assume was the most interesting human being in the world.

He'd seen full grown humans, and they were interesting things, but anything his height was phenomenally more interesting.  He waited patiently beside her, and watched as another human walked into the room.  It was Carter.

The dog knew only joy when it came to this family, and as much as he wanted to run to Carter and hug him and give him a good lick on the cheek or two before work, he had to keep guard over the sleeping child until she woke up.

"Awe, Buddy, that's adorable."  Carter laughed as he watched the dog closely.  He knew he made the right choice getting her a husky.  Emma and Buddy used to be the same height when they first got him, and since then he grew towering heights above . . . but he was just a big old softy.  Due to the way the fur was placed on him, he almost always looked angry, but it was just the way the black fur contrasted the white fur.

He was never angry, he was on guard.  This was his family, and he knew to protect them with all his heart.

As Carter tied his shoes, another fuzzy animal ran over to start playing with the shoestrings.  It was Marie's cat Toby.  She had just picked him up from her old house while they were getting the new puppy; and he was just as interested in the baby as the dog was.

However, the most important task for Toby right now was making sure that he and Carter would get in a fight over those shoelaces.  "Ouch," Carter picked up Toby by the scruff of his neck and said, "Toby, knock it off."

Then, the cat casually walked over to his food-bowl, and even after he finished his food he stayed there.  When called, he didn't move an inch, he just stared back at them disinterestedly.  Buddy on the other hand was aiming to wake up his best friend if she didn't wake up soon.

It was already nine in the morning and Emma hadn't woken up yet.  Normally, she'd wake up at maybe 8 and try to find where her dad hid all the candy.  She'd protested for weeks at a time that she wanted M&M's, and after she got them she took a handful and then protested that M&M's weren't the only candy she asked for.  At the end of three weeks, she'd gotten Skittles, M&M's, Reese's Cups and Pieces, Sour Gummy worms, and an endless supply of Tootsie Pops.

Carter sat over on his couch and mocked in a deep voice towards the dog, "Treats?"

Buddy looked over, wondering if Carter was really going to give him treats.  After putting little thought into it, he ran over and sat in front of Carter with a far off look in his eyes.  Carter shook his head no, and Buddy walked back over to Emma.

"Treats?"

And the dog came back.  After another no, he circled around the table and walked back to Emma.
