Chapter 4

I kept thinking about Leo's words. I wasn't expecting him to do this and now I felt confused. I needed to tell Pam. I'm sure she'll help me decide.

I found Pam in her office. She was speaking on the phone with some important client. I sat down on a chair next to the window and waited until she finished.

"Hey," she said a few minutes later. "You look horrible. What's wrong? Is it the nausea again?"

"No. It's Leo."

She rolled her eyes and sighed out loud.

"What did he do now?" She asked.

"He knows that I'm pregnant," I told her.

"Oh... I hope he didn't have the nerve to fire you or else I'll kill him!" She got up and walked next to me.

"No. Pam, perhaps you should just sit down and listen to me and then tell me what you think."

"Ok." she agreed as she sat next to me. She listened in silence, her facial expression changing various times as I talked. Finally, she couldn't hold back any longer and....

"So you're telling me that Leo kissed you and he wants to get back with you?" Pam asked incredulously.

"Yes. He said he wants to be the father of this child and that he loves me."

"And you believe him? How can you be so stupid?"

"Who said I believe him?" I snapped.

"So you're not returning with him, right?"

"No," I said. Pam relaxed.

"Thank God for that. You can't think that he will change. People don't change."

"I know that."

"But you still love him." She concluded.

"Yes, No... I don't know. I feel so confused right now. Maybe it's the hormones. I haven't been acting myself. I'm so emotional, I keep crying and sometimes without a reason."

"That's the pregnancy. You're under a lot of strain right now. Your body is changing. So how is the baby? You went to the doctor yesterday."

"Fine. Everything is ok."

"Did he tell you what you're having?"

"No. I don't want to know."

"Don't rush things with Leo," Pam said, taking me by surprise.

"What do you mean?"

"You'll return to him. I know it. Even if he's mean and shallow, I know that he's the only man you'll ever love. Don't rush to do it. Take time. Make him prove he is trying to change."

"Why this change of heart?" I asked. Deep down, I had to admit that my life without Leo had been so empty. And yes, even if he hurt me, I still loved him. The fact he wanted me back in his life and that he wanted to be a father to my child filled me with joy.

"I just want you to be happy. Although I'm sure he'll make you suffer again. Men like Leo can't stay with one woman. They don't do it on purpose. It's just in their nature."

"I know that. We'll see what will happen. Maybe I won't return to him after all."

In the next few months, Leo tried hard to change. He never went out in the evening, if not with me. He spent his weekends with me and the first time we made love felt like heaven, even if my tummy was big and I had put on weight. He didn't seem to mind and had kissed all of me. He had caressed my tummy and my child had kicked.
