School Secrets

The group emerged from the top of the cave, expecting to see the night sky, but to their surprise, they found themselves in a dimly lit room. It was full of dusty desks and old textbooks. The room was eerily quiet, as if time itself had frozen. Luna, Swordtail, Blue, and Cricket exchanged puzzled glances.

The group found a door and looked through the window on it. "This is our school," Luna said slowly. "Look, there are the locker rooms. Why are we here?" Swordtail shrugged unhelpfully. They opened the door and the sign on the door behind them read: OUT OF BOUNDS.

"I wonder why it's out of bounds." Blue wondered. "I think we need to explore it." Cricket said. "Makes sense," Swordtail replied. "If it's out of bounds and we are already in such a mess, I think it won't hurt to rummage around the school's secrets."

"It's wrong but . . . I agree with you." Luna said, biting her nails. They all went back into the room and almost immediately found another door at the back, behind the tunnel they came out of.

"Wait." Said Blue. "If the tunnel leads here, then how come when I looked through the hole, I saw the night sky?"

"Magic." Luna answered simply. "Magic," Cricket said, picking the lock. "Is just science we can't explain." Luna rolled her eyes. "I got it!" Cricket cried as the door swung open. They peered inside and saw the principal's desk. It had a big computer, a keyboard, a small plant, and a little label that said JEWEL in shiny gold letters. Blue knew that Swordtail had been in here three times and Luna only once. Blue had sometimes been dragged in by Cricket who had always asked the principal questions about the science program.

"I don't think we should be in here," Blue said nervously. "I feel like I think we are about to uncover a secret that would be better left hidden."

"Really?" Cricket said, her fingers twitching like they often did when she was super close to knowing something. "Guys look at this." Luna said. She was leaning over Jewel's desk and when they saw what she was looking at, Blue's jaw dropped.

It was a map. A map of the cave systems they were just in. In the middle there was a part marked 'Wasp's throne room' and then a little ways down and left there was another part marked 'Entrance to school'. The words were in Jewel's handwriting, even though the map gave off "ancient" vibes. Before Blue could look at the other marked tunnels, the door burst open and Jewel came through, looking tired and stressed. When her eyes landed on the group of teens, she almost looked like she was going to pass out.

"What is this?" Luna asked straight away, holding up the map. "I don't need to explain myself to you," Jewel replied, obviously flustered. "What are you doing here?"

"I asked first and my question is way more interesting. Now, what is this?" Luna retorted. Blue stamped on her foot to make her shut up. When Luna first started school, she came home and talked about how one of her teachers yelled at her for complaining. Blue had sighed and said, "The less you complain, the less detention you will get."

Jewel looked as if she was trying to come up with a lie and then she sighed. "Alright. I don't suppose trying to hide it will be much of a use." She shot a glare at Cricket.

"Nobody really knows," Jewel started. "But my mother-Lady Scarab-is actually President Wasp's aunt, making me Wasp's cousin." The group of teens' eyes widened. "But that's not the thing." She added, steering them away from that topic. Principal Jewel took a deep breath, her eyes filled with a mix of sadness and fear.

"My mother told me that Wasp had two friends, Monarch and Sequoia. The three were inseparable. They shared dreams of unity, peace, and prosperity for the city they were raised in; Pantala. However, as they grew older, their paths diverged." She paced around the room, as if trying to find the right words.

"Wasp became obsessed with power, believing that Pantala could only truly thrive through control. She and Sequoia would often fight, Sequoia accused her of not caring for the environment and the land that she was trying to control. Monarch was caught in the middle, torn between their conflicting ideals."

Jewel sat on her desk chair and fiddled with a pen. "So Wasp decided to run for President, to prove her power over the land and get revenge on Sequoia-to crush her underneath her hands while Wasp was in control.

Sequoia ending up fleeing the country, and I don't know what happened to her." Jewel stopped and sat back in her chair.

"Then what?" Luna pushed, her mind wound up in the story.

"Then Monarch ran for president. She hoped that being president she could show her friend the peaceful path. But Wasp only saw Monarch as a threat to her power and declared them enemies. When Monarch was selected instead of her, she lost her cool. The people who know this story don't know what happened to Monarch but they know she was never seen again. Once Wasp leaked a hint about these tunnels." Jewel pointed to the map.

"I've looked and looked but this is a maze. I can't find Monarch anywhere." She sighed and rolled up the map, tucking it away in a locked desk drawer. "As a teacher I would say 'don't get involved' but now I can't really stop that, can I?"

"No you can't." Cricket agreed.

"I think the tornado is Wasp trying to say that she has had the last of it. The elections are coming up and she knows she isn't getting selected this year." said Jewel.

"Wait!" Blue cried. Swordtail turned to him and realized what he was talking about."Cricket!" Blue said, turning to her. "How much time do we have left?"

Cricket looked down at her watch and then up at them with a horrified expression. "30 minutes." She replied. "I'm sorry Principal Jewel," Luna said. "But Monarch has to wait. We need to stop the tornado."

Jewel nodded respectfully and the four-I mean five, including Bumblebee-rushed out of the school, and back into the flooded, storm-wrecked, Pantala.

A/N: Yes! I got out a long chapter. I did some of Wasp's backstory and her motives because I think this is an important part of the plot.
