Nettle

Luna hadn't seen either one of them since the end of the last task. She tried looking far out to the sides of the obstacle course but she couldn't see black scales or forest green anywhere. She started to feel worried. Not for them, she couldn't care less about them. She felt worried for herself and her real friends.

For all they knew, the pair could be working with President Wasp, or planning a vicious attack! She winced at the last one, remembering his cry of pain when she bit him. "Swordtail!" She cried. He looked up from figuring out how to get past some spiky rolling logs. She jumped as one came near her. "Where's Nettle and Bombardier?" Luna asked.

"Why do you care?" He retorted. "They're probably further out somewhere. Or maybe that's them." He pointed at the two green dragons dodging and hopping over things. Luna shook her head. "I'm pretty sure that is Sundew and Willow." She said, squinting at the green shapes. Swordtail shrugged. "Just don't be worried." He said, doing a backflip in the air. Luna sighed.

Passing through the next lot of obstacles felt like it had taken an hour and according to Cricket it probably had. Luna's worry about Nettle and Bombardier just grew and grew. She kept glancing back just to see if she could locate them, she never could.

She bit her lip. Luna was looking behind her when Swordtail grabbed her jaw. He turned her head towards his. "Luna, look. At. ME." He said, peering into her lime-green eyes. "They are not a problem to us, even if they were somehow planning something their brains are the size of a pea. Bombardier and Nettle can't scheme at all." Luna's face softened. "Thank you." She said, and kissed him quickly.

Even though she trusted Swordtail, she looked back one last time and . . .

Something hard bashed into her head and she was slowly losing consciousness. "Luna!" She heard Swordtail cry. Luna began to fall out of the sky, plummeting toward whatever dangerous thing was beneath her. Suddenly she saw a forest green dragon slammed her tail into Luna's head, flinging her toward Blue. He turned to her and shrieked as she flew into him. Luna's crash sent Blue flying and Cricket had to pull them down, landing awkwardly on a narrow piece of wood. "Luna?" Blue said dizzily, rubbing his forehead. Before she responded Luna was already in action, springing herself at the green dragon. As she got closer she realized it was . . . Nettle? So she was correct to worry!

Luna suddenly felt warmth from her wrists and she didn't even know that fire was swirling out of them. She screamed in surprise and the strands of blazing heat chased after Nettle, dragging Luna along with her. Swordtail ducked as she flew over his head.

Then out of nowhere Bombardier hurled himself towards them, timing his dramatic entrance perfectly. Luna stopped in midair and stood in awe as Swordtail started clawing the black dragon's underbelly with his back legs.

The fire retreated to her wrists and she turned them over. She could see what looked like embers glowing from underneath her scales. She flexed her talons. So I do have a cool power of my own. Blue flew up to her, ignoring the fighting dragons. "Can I do that too?" he asked wonderingly. "The fire thing?" He turned his wrists over. They also glowed like embers in the daylight. "Wow," He breathed, while testing out a few small flames. Cricket brushed her wing over his. "That's so cool." She said, smiling. He grinned at her.

Swordtail flapped up beside them. "That's amazing you guys," He said. "I wonder if I can do that too." His didn't glow like Luna and Blue's but he spun strands of something that looked like silk. It wasn't fiery at all, though. Swordtail shrugged. "Still pretty awesome." Luna said while affectionately bumping his wing.

As they set off on different paths to continue the course, another shrieking sound hit their ears harder than lightning, only this was a scream they had rarely heard before.

This was Sundew's scream.
