Severus and Lily were sitting at the table they had claimed in the back of the library, studying a more complex form of the Confundus Charm, which Flitwick had started teaching them. It was nearly a month after Severus had agreed to become the headmaster's apprentice and just a little over a week after he had been tied into the wards. Having your magical core attached to centuries old wards had felt rather strange at first. And not to mention because of it, Severus could find anyone he wanted to in the castle whenever he wanted. It was like he had his own personal spy network that kept tabs on the Marauders-minus-two – Pettigrew being in Andersonville and Lupin had stopped hanging around them for some unknown reason.

"Hogsmeade weekend is coming up," he mused softly once he was certain Madam Pince wasn't near; he looked up at her to see what Lily would say to that. He didn't know why but he was still insecure when it came to things like these; it felt too good to be true. He had had a crush on her since the end of third year and it was unreal that she could feel the same way about him the way he did her when there were far better looking and richer guys out there for her to date.

Lily looked up from her book and at him; they had yet to kiss, and they both hoped Severus had enough courage to change that. "Potter could hardly let me forget that, now could he? Asking me every free second he has, the arrogant toerag..." she said dryly, trying to put her boyfriend more at ease.

His chuckle was a little strained as he looked back down at his notes he had taken earlier in class, hiding behind his dark curtain of hair. He could stand up to the most feared dark wizard of their time, but he couldn't face the fact that maybe Lily actually liked him, that she hadn't said yes to him out of pity. After a moment of silence he asked quietly, "How many times has he asked you?"

"About a hundred seventy-eight times," she answer nonchalantly as she too looked back down at her book, smirking slightly to herself when she remembered the look on Potter's face when she turned him down in front of the entire Gryffindor House.

Severus's eyebrows shot up his forehead when she said that; he looked up at her, "A hundred seventy-eight times?" he asked, disbelievingly. It seemed that when Potter learned that Lily had a boyfriend, he hadn't give up on her like any normal wizard would have done; he became even more frantic to gain her attention.

Lily looked up again from her book and nodding in confirmation, "You should have seen his face when I turned him down in front of the entire Gryffindor house, it was hilarious!"

Severus allowed himself a tiny smile; it served the idiot right to be knocked down from his high ego like that. "Since you're hopefully not otherwise occupied, would you care to join me... to Hogsmeade?" he didn't think that this could be any more awkward.

Lily flashed him a large grin, she was definitely falling in love with him. She didn't doubt it for a second, "I would love to, Sev – Alice is going to meet Frank there and Mary is being her normal prissy self..." She trailed off as Severus placed a finger to his lips, Madam Pince was getting closer.

They both looked back down at their books and continued to study as the strict librarian walked by. However, Severus really wasn't reading what was in front of him; instead he was thinking about the emotion he had just seen written clearly all over Lily's face – love. "Maybe... she could love me..."

!REVIEW!

Two days later, Severus found himself walking with his arm wrapped around Lily's shoulders down the main street of Hogsmeade; she had her arm around his waist. Fall had begun so it was slightly chilly, but not enough to warrant their heavy winter robes. For once Severus was wearing Muggle clothes to a Hogsmeade trip; he had on a black second-hand pullover jumper that his mother had gotten him last year. Underneath that he had on an old brown thermal shirt and a pair of faded denim jeans that had a hole or two in them. And he was wearing Tobias's old work boots instead of his dragonhide boots – Severus had recently decided that since that man hadn't been fit to be called a father, he wouldn't call him that.
