Yong's whole body froze. It was like someone took a bucket of icy water and poured it from high up. It started with pressure and pain all over her head. She felt cold for a few seconds, then this unexplainable warmth took over and she felt her whole body relaxing. She looked down at her hands slowly. The raindrops were biting her skin where they fell. She could feel her feet on the ground, her shoes half buried in the mud. The grass stems caressing the bottom part of her pants. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. She could taste the rain and the wind. She could smell the trees and the flowers, and the earth. Her hand touched the stone in front of her and she felt it was as freezing as her fingers. But on the inside, she felt warm. How was this possible? It can't be a dream. It looked and felt too real, but... No. Byul can't be there. It was most likely a hallucination. As far as she knew Byul was in a coma at a hospital somewhere back in Seoul. She couldn't be standing behind her. How'd she know where Yong was? Especially in another country. She went to a graveyard in a small unknown city in the US, on a random day, around noon. There was no way Moonbyul had figured that out.... Unless. The flashbacks... If Byul was really her soulmate, she must have had the same dreams. Was this why she brought up the topic while they were texting each other? Was it possible that all this time they were sleeping alone in cold sheets, dreaming of each other? Has Byulie always been hers?
"Why did you push me out of that van?" She heard herself asking.
"... because at least one of us needed to go home... and buy a yellow house, and have a family, and go to car drive cinemas, and burn pancakes on Sunday mornings," Byul said, tearing up.
"You're so stupid..." Yong said, shaking her head and wiping her tears, her back still facing Byul. "I wanted this with you...not with just anybody"
"... I'm sorry I couldn't take you home," Byul said quietly. "Yong..."
"I can't..." Yong whispered. " If I turn around you would disappear. You're not real"
"I am.." Byul said and looked at her feet. She was standing firmly on the ground. A small stick of wood under her left foot. This was what made the cracking noise a few seconds ago. Her right shoe was untied. Peculiar. She looked at her clothes, which were getting more and more cold, the more they attracted the rain. One could literally see the water drops that had formed on her sleeves. They looked silver. She was still holding onto the flowers. Their stems gliding between her fingers. She looked around. The trees looked alive. The wind was carrying the smell of rain and every time it hit Yongsun's hair she could feel her perfume. It must be real. It was not like the dream. She was actually standing there. Yong was not going to disappear. This was real.
"Please..." Byul whispered.
Yong held her own hands then stood up tentatively and turned around slowly. And there she was. The love of her lives - Moonbyul. She was the same height she remembered. Her clothes - looking a size too big. Her hair - the same color. Her hands - squeezing two jasmine flowers. Her eyes - full of tears that were begging to wash her cheeks.
