"Why now?" Derrick asked Jennifer, they were sitting across from each other on the couch. Jennifer didn't really have an answer as to why now. She had been avoiding Derrick and his calls since the pizza incident a few weeks ago. She knew he meant no harm but something about him had her running for the hills.
"You said you wanted to be friends right?"
"Yeah, so what does that have to do with me, being here at your house?"
"Well friends hang out at each other's houses. So let's hang" Jennifer turned the TV on.
Derrick smiled at himself. He knew it was a long shot if not almost impossible to win Jennifer over, but if this was her way of stopping the fight against him, he would take it.
"Okay, but I'm not watching this." Derrick pointed to the TV and shook his head.
"What? No, no this show is great. I'm not changing it."
"Seriously, come on its so predictable give me the remote." Derrick tried to take the remote, their bodies almost pressed together.
"Can you back up?" Jennifer putting her hand between them.
Derrick felt rejected, he knew he didn't do anything wrong, but for someone to just openly shut him down, it hit his ego hard.
"My bad, I wasn't tryna – forget it." He got up and walked to the kitchen.
"Yeah, no it's um cool. Just like my space you know?" she ran her hands through her hair feeling awkward. "Can you grab me a drink while you're in there?"
This wasn't working thought Jennifer. She didn't know how to be friends with someone like Derrick; the pretend brother of the girl she was hooking up with. She would hate for someone to get the wrong idea about her. But at the same time she knew what she was doing, she wasn't interested in Derrick, but she knew he was. All she kept wondering was, is it wrong to try and be his friend? It's not her fault he liked her, plus how did she know she wasn't some contest prize between him and Aaryn? This was the only way she would find out.
Derrick returned with a bottle of water and a can of soda, as he went to give Jennifer the soda she quickly took the bottle of water. "Excuse me that was mine" he snatched it back. "Yeah but I don't drink soda, it's bad for you." Jennifer jumped over the couch and grabbed her own bottle of water from the kitchen.
"I would have given it to you." Derrick said as he took a sip.
"Yeah, after you put your germs all over it." she rolled her eyes, and smiled.
"Germs? What are those?" he mocked
"So..." Jennifer looked around. She was uncomfortable suddenly.
"So? I'm not sure what we should do." Derrick rubbed his head and smiled coolly.
"Me either." Jennifer stared at him. He had a really nice smile.
Derrick cleared his throat to get Jennifers attention. She looked up at him. "I had braces."
"Huh?" Jennifer looked up at him.
"I know what we can do." He got up and stuck his hand out.
She looked down then at him, and stood up leaving him with his hand out. He snapped his finger "Right so let's go for a run." He headed towards her front door.
"A run?" she was skeptical.
"Yeah I like to run you like to run, and sitting on the couch staring at each other isn't much of an activity." She followed after him.
"I wasn't staring." She glared at him, embarrassed that she really was.
"Just like you don't drink soda but it's in your fridge?" he raised his eyebrow at her
"It's Jamies, and I wasn't staring." She rolled her eyes.
"Say what you want, I was staring." And he took off leaving her to catch up to him.
