Derrick observed Jennifer in all of her brilliance. She was in her own world half the time, her clumsiness made her entertaining, Jennifer loved to sing; couldn't hold a note, but her child like spirit made up for all of that.
She caught his gaze. "What?" she laughed brushing her hair out of her face.
"Just watching." Derrick smiled.
"I'm not a T.V." she half smirked.
"You're kinda shaped like one." He teased
"Oh don't you wish." She retorted. Then went back to dancing around.
She was exactly what Derrick wanted. And he had been fooling himself thinking he could be friends with her. He wanted to respect her wishes, he also felt it was worth the risk.
"Seriously quit staring." She continued to laugh.
"Am I making you uncomfortable?" He raised an eyebrow.
"No, not exactly, more so curious."
"About?"
"What you're thinking."
"You." He said matter of factly.
"And?" she moved her hand in small circles signaling him to continue.
"Conceited much?" he teased.
Jennifer was really interested as to know what he thought about her. They had been hanging out for the past two months off and on, and she wouldn't admit it but she's gotten used to him. He made her laugh, and he dealt with every wall she's thrown up. When they spoke she could tell he actually cared about the words coming out her mouth. She felt a bit of regret for being so harsh towards him in the beginning.
"Just tell me Derrick." She was putting her hair in a ponytail. A few strands escaped framing her face.
"Well, I like being around you that's all."
"I like being around you too." she smiled. It was easy being his friend she thought.
"You're a great friend to have." Derrick tried to sound upbeat but it was forced.
"Yeah, so are you." It sounded weird to hear out loud. Friends. Yes they were friends, yet it didn't sound like it really fit them.
She sat next to him criss crossed flipping through the T.V. channels. One of his arms was on his lap and the other was on the top of couch behind her back. He had his feet on the table. It was a regular day for them, just kickin' it.
"Here" she went to hand him the remote. They locked eyes once again.
"What –"before she knew what was happening Derrick leaned in and kissed her. Stunned she didn't move, her eyes got wide and she leaned back.
"What are you doing?!" she demanded. Half in shock, half pissed off.
"I... I can't do this." He got up and paced back and forth.
"Do what? Find the mind you just lost?" she turned around to face him.
"I like you okay. I thought I could just be your friend, and well I lied to myself. I'm sorry."
"Clearly Derrick." Jennifer wasn't sure why she was angry anymore. Yes he kissed her, so what? It was just a kiss, an unwanted kiss, but no harm no foul.
"It's fine let's just forget about it." She put a finger on her lip and sat there. Thinking, letting the sounds of his steps fade out. The last time she kissed a boy she was in early high school. It was just weird, and not something she wanted to do again. Yet this time was different. What if she would have just went with it? Would that have been so bad? She shook the thought out her head.
"I like women." She thought out loud.
"I know." Derrick's voice brought her back to reality.
She looked up at him with misguided eyes. "I. Like. Women." She said slowly
"I know!" he stopped in his tracks. He shook his head. "I gotta go Jen." He grabbed his jacket and left.
"Wait!" she got up. "This is your apartment."
