Jamie was walking through the mall when Derrick stopped her.
"Hey Jamie right?" he flashed a quick smile at her.
"Yeah... you're Jen's friend right? She was trying to place a name to his face. To Jamie he was a beautiful chocolate man. The definition of tall dark and handsome.
"Derrick." He pointed to his name tag.
"Hey, what's up?" she gave him a once over again.
"I was wondering if I could talk to you for a second, I'm about to get off in a few minutes."
She looked up at him. She smiled at him before gently flipping her hair over her shoulder. "Sure. I'll be right here."
"Great I'll be right back." he walked away.
Jamie pulled out her phone and started to text Jennifer. Then changed her mind, she could use this opportunity to see if she could feel him out. Maybe even get to know him better.
A few minutes later Derrick popped back up. "Hey walk with me."
"Where are we going?" she followed him.
"Just the food court, I'm hungry and need your advice."
"About?" it was surprising to her that he would go to her for anything, they barely knew one another.
"Jennifer." He ordered his food then they sat at a table.
"Do you like my sister?"
"Yes."
"Do you know she's a lesbian?"
"Yes, I'm well aware." He laughed, more at himself.
"So what do you think you're gonna accomplish honestly?"
"I don't know. I just want a chance. I'm more than okay with being her friend. I just – I don't know I'm hoping for a miracle." He ran his hand over his head.
"Well, all I can tell you is Jen likes genuine people. Just be yourself, don't try to get at her like she's a regular girl, she will see through that and there goes any hope you have at getting a chance." She looked at her phone. "I gotta go."
"Yeah okay. Thanks Jamie, I owe you one."
Derrick knew even with advice from Jamie that Jennifer was more than likely never going to be his. He had everything going against him.
