The vigilant Yaksha was miserable, yet determined.

Every year during the Lantern Rite the citizens of Liyue honour one of their many adepti through a large final lantern to be lit on the final day of the festival. Every year these illuminated beasts would watch on the sidelines, disguised in the city, as their people celebrated them.

This year, unfortunately, a certain anemo wielding adeptus had to attend to the growing monster population around the festival's start.

He scoffed as he killed another monster, watching as it dissipated and added to the karmic debt he had been carrying for decades at this point.

Thinking to his past, he remembered that fateful night. He was on the cusp of insanity, its arms open to welcome him, yet a sweet melody kept him tethered to reality.

He followed it and found a bard, seated on a rock, playing the flute. He was calm as he did so, Xiao felt compelled to get closer as he felt lighter, a weight being slowly lifted off of his shoulders.

The green stranger opened his eyes, a smile playing at his lips when he saw his one man audience and noticing the disappearing aura around him.

"What is your name?" He asked once he finished playing, his blue eyes swirling with excitement as he was next to the Liyuen instantly.

"I'm known as The Vigilant Yaksha." The adeptus responded simply, immediately captivated by his companion.

"I'm Venti the bard, nice to meet you Vigilant Yaksha." The archon giggled.

The yaksha smiled as the memories came back, not realising when he made his way to the same spot he met the love of his life all those years ago.

"If only I had the courage to tell you...what I truly feel." He sighed as he sat down, longing to look to his side and see those gorgeous blue eyes that were often in his dreams.

All the while, in the City of Freedom, a bard played in front of a cathedral.

His thoughts wandered to Liyue, wondering how the Lantern Rite was going and what adeptus they were honouring this year.

He wished to be able to visit the land of contracts and experience the festival again.

He spent the rest of the day performing, promising himself that he would go to Liyue for the Lantern rite, even if it was just the final day.

With a sigh, the archon watched as the sun set, determined to get to Liyue.

Quickly, he bid his farewells to Swan and Lawrence, leaving smiles on their faces as they waved him off under the cover of night.

Xiao grumbled as he finished off yet another group of monsters, noting that he had begun to feel as though he was weighed down by an invisible force. It took a bit but he realised it was his karmic debt that had returned, slowly weighing him down and clawing at him until he accepted death's cold embrace.

Yet he managed to fight off those thoughts, and the acceptance of his fate that was rapidly approaching, for he had something to live for. Someone to live for.

He had promised his brothers and sisters that when he died, there would be no regrets, and he planned not to break it. Every day he battled his innermost intrusive thoughts and impulses, knowing that he could not let himself die before he revealed his true thoughts about his saviour.

"Venti..." The adeptus whispered as he closed his eyes, trying to imagine how it could all be if things went his way.

The bard straightened his posture suddenly, a flash of memories brought to the forefront of his mind as he walked.
