It was dark, and chills crept through your body as you slowly opened your eyes. You saw the break of dawn on the horizon as a familiar feeling washed over you. You looked up, and sure enough, the [e/c] eyed woman met your eyes, a kind look overcoming her stressed features. "It's okay, I got you, we're almost there." The harsh rocking of the sprinting horse underneath you dulled with her warm embrace as the terrain around us slowly glowed under the rising sun. You heard a heartbeat under your ear; it was the woman's. You found yourself slowly being lulled into darkness.
Minutes of serene silence passed before you woke up to a sharp intake of breath. Your eyes shoot open as the woman's grasp tightens around you, and the heartbeat that had been so sure faltered before spiking vigorously. Your eyes adjust to the skies, now a lighter blue, before noticing an approaching figure. It had its arms flung around the top of its head, eyes dull but smiling creepily. A Titan. It was gaining on us as you heard the woman swear to herself. We continue trying to outrun it, but the Titan follows swiftly behind. You try to move, but you find yourself unable to do anything as you watch it gain speed before it reaches out, grasping at where we raced across the green terrain. We moved from side to side, horse swaying frantically before suddenly you felt your world turn. We were falling.
We hit the ground harshly, but you are protected by the woman's warm embrace as we roll several meters away from our horse. You hear a shaky breath from above as your vision slowly clears. The woman meets your eyes, and for a moment, everything is silent before a shrill scream echoes. You look up in horror as the woman lets you go, the Titan gripping tightly onto her form. You see tears spurt from her eyes in agony, followed by a sickening crunch. Blood seeps out of her mouth as she continues to struggle when, suddenly, there is a small burst of light, and in a flash, she rips out of the Titan's grasp. You stare wide-eyed at the speed of her movements, not seeing anything like it. The woman stumbles as she falls to your side, coughing up more blood.
She looks up, eyes frantic, as the Titan is taken aback by the shock of her movements. Quickly, she takes you again in her arms as she groans in pain. Suddenly, the world around you turns into a blur, barely visible as sparks surround you. You hold on tightly to the woman who holds you, the wind rushing past us. You realise the woman is running, faster than you could ever go. Several seconds pass of the indescribable feeling of being so weightless yet secure in her grasp before we finally stop, and you look up. Is that...
Wall Maria.
But it's still intact, covering us with shade as the sun finally escapes the horizon's clutches, gleaming soft rays of sunlight around us. You hear a cough as we abruptly fall to the ground, the woman's eyes shining with pain. She hisses, seeing red soak through her shirt, eyes slightly dulling. She was dying. You reach out for her hand, which is littered with cuts from when she fell to the ground, but you pause in shock. The small cuts on her hands had already faded, leaving clear [s/c] skin, even the slightly large gash on her forearm, healing under the light. The woman seems to notice your wide eyes as she smiles softly, leaning against the walls.
"Ah, this," she whispers, following your line of sight to her arms. She lets out a shaky breath, pain on her features as she murmurs, "You see, [y/n], you and I, we heal a lot quicker than the normal human being. It's why we can run faster, too, though I'm afraid you might not be able to run as fast as me; our powers seem to fade with every generation." She sighs, eyebrows pulling together as tears sprout from her eyes as they turn to the sky. She let out a dry laugh. "What am I saying? It's useless now; even our power won't save me from death; the damage is too deep", she breathes out, coughing up more blood. You sit and stare unmovingly at her dwindling form. "If only your father were still with us," she mutters before sighing, "though you might have had a happier life born to another family, I was so happy to have been your mum, even if it was only for a short while... we were happy."
