The four of you were wandering back to your hideout, another day gone, though it was hard to tell what was day and night in a place constantly surrounded by darkness. As you turned the corner, you were all met with the sight of an old man, seemingly waiting for something or someone, you'd wager. "What old man? Need something?" Isabel gave him a bored look as Levi, Furan, and you glared wearily. Men with his attire were never good news. "I'm here to offer a job," he states, unbothered by the intimidation. "You're at the wrong place. We don't do jobs," Furlan smiles grimly as you stay slightly hidden behind Levi, silently watching the exchange. "We'll pay," the man offers but is quickly cut off by Levi. "Get lost," his glare is deadly as you follow him up the stairs to your home, only to be stopped by the man's voice again.
"I'm afraid, I've already paid the down payment." You start to grow irritated at his persistent nature. "You're nuts; we've never met you," Furlan glared, all signs of his usual charisma now gone. "But you know him, don't you?" the man glances farther down the street. There, Yan seemed to be helped by men you had not seen before. "Yan," you mutter as you exchange a look with Furlan. What did he have to do with any of this? "His leg requires help. He needs a hospital on the surface. Isn't that right, Levi?" Levi remains unmoving as Furlan continues to berate the man. You can't help but remain suspicious but choose to stay quiet for now, as Levi finally agrees to talk to the man, seeing as he cannot dispute any of what he has said.
.....
You find yourselves walking up the flights of stairs to the surface. You give Isabel a reassuring squeeze of her hand as she too, seems weary of what this exchange could bring. You are hit with strong rays of sunlight as you come to a halt. You stare up, blinking, unused to so much light that envelops you. "So, these are the guys then," an unfamiliar voice speaks up from the carriage that awaited at the top of the staircase. "Yes, their skill is certain," the old man states as you feel eyes glazing down towards you. "Who the hell are you," Levi exclaims, seemingly over the mysterious facade of the whole situation. "I know you are suspicious, but you can trust me," the strange man muttered again. You scoff, "and why's that," Furlan asks exasperated. "Meeting here with you is one form of proof. I'm taking a big risk too," the man states. "Did you get the payment?"
Levi glares back harshly, "I don't know what you guys call it on the surface, but down here, we call that a hostage." The man pays no mind to Levi's words as he continues. "You will be rewarded handsomely for completing the job. Listen. If you succeed, not only will you receive an enormous amount of money... you will receive surface residency too." Surface residency. The man continued talking about what the job entailed, as you exchanged a brief look with Levi.
.....
The walk back down to your hideout is silent; no words are exchanged as you all trek back down the staircase and through the streets, but your head is full of thoughts. Surface residency. That was our dream, our ticket to freedom... No more darkness, stench, or beatdown nobodies begging on the streets. Air, and trees, and open skies.
[Flashback]
It was a short time after you had met Furlan, and he slept soundly on a couch. You sat drinking tea with Levi, and he kept cleaning the grime off his gear from the day. You sat there in comfortable silence basking in the warmth of the drinks you both had in front of you; it was a luxury we had saved up for. Tea was so expensive in the Underground, as were every other overpriced thing that street vendors seemed to throw into our faces. But you could not blame them, this was not a place where you were shown mercy or pity, the fittest survive and the weak die. That was life in the Underground. You look up at Levi, the dimly lit room casting shadows on his face, he had been through a lot, as much as all of us had.
