"Hey, hey, it's about to go down. Hey, hey, we're about to get down." - Summer's Gone (Slumber Party Girls)
It was a bright sunny morning at William McKinley High School and Violette Donovan was pretty sure the sun was personally trying to send her blind. She tried desperately not to squint because she refused to let the sun know it was succeeding. However, prepping for a basket toss as people held her above their heads required a lot of concentration to not stuff up, and Violette was not exactly known for her multitasking abilities.
"Donovan if you squint any harder, those wrinkles are going to stick themselves to your face!" Coach Sylvester screamed through her megaphone as Violette was tossed into the air. Despite being upside down, mid-air, she swore she could hear Santana Lopez chuckling from her place somewhere on the field. However, with the ground looking like the sky as Violette tried to search for her mid-flip, it wasn't exactly easy to locate anyone, let alone figure out if Santana Lopez was in fact laughing at her struggles.
Violette followed through with the rest of the routine, deciding that flipping and not squinting at the blinding sun was definitely something she would need to practice if the sun continued its vendetta. As the routine came to an end, and all the Cheerios tried to simultaneously catch their breaths and also hold them, Violette let her shoulders drop in disappointment when one of the other girls fell from her spot atop their formation.
"You think this is hard? Try being waterboarded. That's hard!" Coach Sylvester announced in clear disappointment.
Violette sighed heavily as she followed her fellow Cheerios to gather their things at the end of practice. Out of the corner of her eye she could see the shiny blonde ponytail of Co-Captain Quinn Fabray who was whispering with her friends, sparing the occasional sideways glance, or glare, at Violette.
"You're back tuck was sloppy."
Just as Violette had been about to leave the field, the voice of a certain aforementioned cheerleader stopped her in her tracks.
"Well, your leg mount needs work, and your splits aren't flat, so come back to me when you've stretched a little Fabray," Violette quipped as she turned to face the other girl, flipping her brunette ponytail over one shoulder. She carefully watched Quinn's expression, who returned an equally cautious look as she was flanked by the rest of the so-called "Unholy Trinity", Santana and Brittany.
"Maybe if you opened your eyes properly, your basket toss would have landed better," Quinn continued the argument.
"And if you opened your eyes to reality, Q, you'd realise I'm not taking advice from the girl who slipped over last week doing a round off," Violette replied, crossing her arms and huffing at their usual fighting. She was starting to get sick of the little show her and Fabray seemed to put on every day.
"That's a lot of talk from the girl who missed our last practice for "unspecified reasons," Santana spoke, using air quotes around the last two words, as she decided to join the discourse. Violette straightened her posture a little as she noticed the way Santana looked her up and down.
"I was sick,"
"You looked fine in bio later that same day," Quinn challenged. Violette almost smiled at the implications she found in those words. Quinn Fabray had been watching her in their shared biology class.
"Why are you watching me so closely Fabray? Obsessed much?" Violette asked, raising an eyebrow as she watch a glare settle itself onto Quinn's face, Santana simultaneously scoffing at the comment.
"You wish," Quinn sneered, rolling her eyes before storming off, Santana and Brittany following their queen bee. Violette stood for a moment, watching Quinn walk away, watching her blonde ponytail swish with every move of her hips before she too left for the day.
