"She's burning up," Elias ran a wet towel across my forehead. Somehow he sensed what I was going to say. "Don't say you're fine. You're not fine!" I just didn't want him to worry or be upset and stressed. It wouldn't do him any good.
"What can you do to bring her fever down?" Elias was questioning the pack doctor fiercely and I feared for his life right now as Elias wasn't in his right mind. He was never in his right mind when it came to me.
The last thing I remember was being with Aurora in the forest earlier when I started to hurt. When I came to, I was here. With Elias yelling at the doctor.
I could feel my body temperature rising and my head starting to throb. But I couldn't let anyone know, especially not Elias. He was already worried enough about me, I didn't want to add to his stress.
As my temperature continued to rise, Elias noticed the change in my demeanor and immediately sprang into action. "She's getting worse! Do something," he exclaimed, his eyes filled with worry and concern.
I tried to assure him that I was okay, that it was just a minor fever and it would pass. But deep down, I knew it was more than that. My body was burning up and I could feel my wolf fighting against some unknown force.
"Here," He gave Elias a list of herbs and medicines that would help bring my fever down and instructed him to keep me hydrated.
As Elias rushed to gather the herbs, I couldn't help but feel guilty. I didn't want him to go through all this trouble, especially when he was already dealing with so much.
But despite all that, he was still here, taking care of me. I couldn't have asked for anyone better. As I laid there, feeling helpless and weak, I couldn't help but reflect on my pain.
God, what's wrong with me? I tried to talk to my wolf but something was blocking me from her. The more I struggled to contact her, the further away she seemed.
"I told you to keep a good eye on her," I heard Elias shout from the hallway. I couldn't make out the other voice, but I was praying for them. "That wasn't good enough! Look now. She's in there, getting sicker and sicker. It's like every time she's here, something happens where I'm put in situation to lose her. Are you understanding? That she could die? I don't think you do, Liam!"
When I heard Ellie speak of Liam's name, I gathered all the strength I had. Give me strength.
I carefully swung my feet across the bed, so as not to catch the doctors attention; I held onto the bed for support, skipping and hopping with wobbly knees.
I wish I could just teleport. Just once. Not far. Just at least outside the door.
I focused an image in my mind and when I opened my eyes, my hand was grasping the doorknob. With a shaky hand, I opened it and clung to the wall for support.
"Ellie," I used to the wall for support to creep down the hall. "You're too loud."
"What are you doing out of bed? You need to rest. Oh," Ellie caught me just as I was about to collapse. "That's it."
"I'm not going anywhere," I pushed him. "Tell Liam you're sorry. Right now," I coughed. "I mean it," I threatened.
"Liam, I am sorry. I'm just frustrated," he apologized.
"Whoa, what's going on here?" Matt walked up.
"Perfect timing," Elias sighed.
"Are you okay?" Matt directed his worry toward me. "You don't look good.""She's having some sort of sickness. Where's Evern?" Ellie asked.
"Right here," we turned our attention to behind Matt. "Oh, poor girl," Evie bent down to touch my forehead. "You need medicine.""I have it. At least that's what he told me to get," Elias gave Evie the pouch of herbs.
"Let's get her to bed," she ordered. Elias lifted me easily into his arms, softly tucking me into the bed once again."I'll need a bit of time," Evie said, "and space."
"Fine," the three worried men reluctantly exited the room and occupied the hallway with their nonstop pacing."Tell me what's going wrong," she used her hands to inspect me.
"I can't talk to my wolf at all. There's something in the way. And I was just getting my power back. I was in the groove, Evie, I swear. I was so close," I shared."So what exactly were you doing before this?"
I smiled sheepishly, before lowering my voice to a complete whisper, "I was in the forest. Alone. I was out there looking for you but I got Aurora instead. She was helping me channel my power; she was helping me get back to myself."
"She probably unknowingly woke up something in you. Started a process of some kind," Evie huffed. "Granny Phoe, come out! I know you can hear me."
"I sure can," her voice filled the room.
"Show yourself," Evie demanded.
"Nicer!"
"Please."Aurora graced us with her presence, smiling on the other side of my bed. "I didn't know the power didn't fully awaken that night. I thought after Valkon bit you, that when you went home with Elias, you'd awaken the powers. But you didn't. And I didn't know that. Okay? Gods truth."
"So you know what's wrong with her? Fix it!"
"I'm afraid if I fix it, I'm going to make it worse. Her body needs training, so does her mind and spirit. She's not the same little girl anymore. She's a woman, ready for so much power she cannot fathom. And she isn't ready."
"So how can we fix me without making it worse?" I heaved. It was getting harder to breathe.
"Here," Evie made me drank herbal tea. As the herbs and medicines started to take effect, my cough and heavy pants began to subside.
"Well the only answer to that is to contact what's blocking your wolf. Are you ready for that?" Aurora asked.
"I'll have to be. Right?"
"Don't blame me if this backfires," Aurora rolled her eyes.
