As I stood there in the dark, my heart racing and my mind spinning, I couldn't help but feel a sense of panic and fear.
My wolf lay there crying, laid over and bleeding, whimpering in pain. It was a sound that I could never forget, a sound that struck me to my core. I panicked as I stumbled and tripped, my hands reaching out to find my way. My heart shattered into a million pieces as I ran to her side.
I could feel the hot tears streaming down my face, mixing with the blood that stained my hands. My blood boiled with anger and the bubbling pain rose to the surface.
I just didn't understand. I was finally getting her back just to lose her again. I gently stroked her fur, trying to soothe her and ease her pain.
I could feel her warmth slowly fading away, her life slipping through my fingers. And I couldn't do anything to save her. I felt a sense of helplessness and despair. My wolf had always been there for me, through thick and thin. How could I live without her? She had stood by my side and protected me, and now I couldn't even protect her. I felt like I had failed her, failed as her human.
I simply didn't want to.
"Rory help me! Evie! Someone. Please!" I begged, my hands were covered with blood.
But there was no answer, just the sound of my wolf's soft whimpers. I looked down at her and saw the pain in her eyes. And in that moment, I knew that I had to do what was best for her. I held up my hands, attempting to conjure some sort of power. I knew it was a long shot, but I couldn't help but hope for a miracle. "Please work dammit," I desperately pleaded. "Please," I begged, my voice barely above a whisper. "Please help me. I can't lose her."
With a heavy heart, I whispered my final goodbye to my wolf and watched as her light slowly faded away.
In the darkness, a swift wind circled around me. Then, as if it were directly outside the darkness, I heard a voice – a voice that was both familiar and unfamiliar at the same time. "You have to let her go," it said, its tone firm. "It's her time."
I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Was this some kind of sick joke? How could anyone expect me to let go of my wolf, my best friend? "No!" I just couldn't. "Save her."
I heard a rustling in the darkness. I looked up, my heart racing with fear. "What are you?" I cautiously asked, not knowing what to expect. "Where are you?!" I yelled, my voice echoing through the darkness.
It was almost as if the wind was it's own person, once trying to comfort me, to let me know that I was not alone, but now it was completely different. It formed a slowly rotating cyclone around me, my hair flowing in the harsh wind, my lungs constricted by the air.
I couldn't see too much, but I could sense a powerful presence around me.
And then, I felt it – the tight, swift wind circling around me was beginning to enclose me inside. The fierce wind whistled, cutting and scarring me the smaller it got.
"Aurora!!" I yelled. Why couldn't she hear me? "Evie!" If I stay here any longer, I'll die. "Aurora! Evern! Someone please!" The tears slipped from my eyes.
"Ow," the wind cut me on my arms and knees. "Please someone," I was desperate as my head fell back.
Suddenly, and just for a split second, the wind stopped. The once chaotic and powerful force, now still and silent. I slowly opened my eyes, trying to adjust to the sudden lack of wind.
That's when I saw it.A figure, cloaked in darkness, standing in front of me. I couldn't see their face, but I could feel their piercing gaze on me.
"Who are you?" I asked, my voice trembling with fear and curiosity.
The figure remained silent, but I could sense their presence getting closer to me. I tried to back away, but my body was frozen in place.
"What do you want from me?" I asked, my heart pounding in my chest.
The figure finally spoke, their voice deep and menacing. "I have something that belongs to you," they said, their tone sending shivers down my spine. I racked my brain, trying to figure out what they could possibly mean.It taunted me through menacing laughs. "Do you want it?"
Before I had a chance to form even the most incoherent answer, the violent wind kicked up again, more fiercely, with more bite this time. Blood seeped from wounds, running down my skin, staining my clothes and the midnight ground below me.
My adrenaline was being sucked away by the raging force of wind. With my last ounces of strength, I inhaled, mustering all the oxygen I could into my windpipe, my diaphragm almost bursting. "I WANT TO LEAVE!" I roared, the tears streaming down my face.
The wind raged faster. I screamed out in agony as a sharp pain sunk into my shoulder. My hands raced to the spots filled with pain, only to for the pain to spread over my body, the gurgling noises growing louder as they consumed the air. Blood shot from the constant sharp pains. I moved my hands around to each place but it wasn't enough.
I wept, "Am I going to die in here? With my wolf?"
The hairs on the back of my neck stood up, but it was too late. "Not if I can help it," the voice came from the cloaked person.
The sharp pain from earlier was nothing now compared to the burning hot, searing stab in my neck.
"AaaUuuhhhh," I yelped. My skin was on fire, and the ache only grew as the stab deepened, destroying my layers of flesh as the ache spread throughout me. Everything in me wanted to scream.
