Chapter 3

Felix was with the village chief, talking about his past. He wanted him to know who he was. At the village, they knew him as a happy drunk troublemaker. He would spend his time with Tommy, a friend in the town. The people also knew he had a wife who died. Felix didn't have memories of himself living there.

It was getting late, and Felix was still talking to the village chief. "My father and uncle went to a meeting they had the following day; I stayed with my mother and siblings," Felix said. He told the chief they became upset when his father and uncle returned. He told them what was going to happen.

"It seems that the Demon Lord has broken some kind of negotiation he had with the Lords; he demanded they gave him their lands," Dexter said, Felix's father. Dexter also said the Lord sent word to their respected allied Kingdoms for help.

Felix explains to the chief that the village he grew up in was ruled by a Lord named Cedric Thomason; the Thomasons were a wealthy family with ties to the kingdom. One of their sons, Cedric, came to the Broken Continent to expand their family business. The king of Hyperion gave Cedric the title of ambassador and a place to rule.

Other kingdoms followed suit and gained a piece of territory on the Broken Continent. With the ambassadors, the nations on the Broken Continent established ties to the mainland. This included the Demon Kingdom. After explaining about the Lord, Felix continued.

Felix and his family were troubled by the news that they didn't know what to do. "My father said that Lord Cedric was raising an army because the troops he had weren't enough to stop the demon forces. The other ambassadors agreed to do the same."

Felix's mother asked what he meant. Dexter said a group of soldiers would arrive soon and prepare people. "They are going to train the older men and all able children; that means you, Felix," Felix's siblings became scared, and his mother wept.

"Is there anything we can do," Felix asked. "No, the chief has named everyone who can fight; some have already decided to leave. Who knows what will happen to them." Dexter tells his wife to pack; he says that women and children will be escorted to the port cities and taken off the land. "At least they will be saving the families," Dexter says.

Felix becomes emotional; he tells the village chief that he hasn't seen his family in years. He promised to look for them after the war was over. The chief asked if he knew where they were. Felix said he had family on the mainland but didn't know where. "My father and mother eloped when they were younger; apparently, my mother was supposed to marry some guy," Felix says.

"Well, I don't know the details because I only overheard my uncle and father talk when drunk." the chief laughs, "I've heard people talk about that, especially those presented to nobles. Some parents think only about money and statues."

The village chief asks about his uncle. Felix tells him that he, on the other hand, was a womanizer; he slept with the wrong man's wife and helped his dad elope. Since they were brothers, he stayed with them to start a new life.

"He was still doing his own thing but only went after single women." Felix shook his head and told him it was terrible. The chief said that some of what he heard looked to be true. The demon nation took out the closest cities and towns before the allied kingdoms responded.

"The only ones who could stand against them were the tribes of beastmen and those demons who opposed their king," Felix said. He continues to tell the chief his story. He picked up when his mother and siblings were ready to leave. He said other families were already going.

Dexter said his goodbyes and hugged his kids. He tells them they will see each other again. Felix hugs his mother and his siblings. Matt, Felix's uncle, also says his goodbyes and tells them he will protect them. They go to the wagon and get on. Some families didn't have one, so they offered to help them.
