Chapter 6

On a sunsetting beach, the tides come in and then drag the sand back into the sea. It was a beautiful sunset. The fading light made the water more beautiful. Along the shoreline walked a woman wearing a sundress. Her bare feet sank into the sand and were then revealed by the sweeping tides. Her purple complexion glowed brilliantly.

A door opened out of nowhere, "Lady Mio, it is time for dinner." The sun-setting scenery disappears, and the woman stands in a room. A maid walks in, pushing a cart with food. Guards accompany her inside the room. The maid was a white-haired, pink-skinned woman with black eyes and red pupils, part of the demon race. She had long hair and wore a Western maid outfit.

Mio Nikia, princess of the demon race, has small horns, long purple hair, and a purple complexion. Her eyes are also dark and red. She was wearing a sundress. Mio sees the maid, goes to a table, and sits. The maid places a plate on her table, and Mio eats. The guards turn and wait for her to be finished.

"Rio, I'm bored. Can you bring me something to play with?" Rio Shiba, Princess Mio's maid, asked. Rio told her she could bring her more books. Mio didn't want to read; she finished eating. Rio removed the plates. While doing so, she whispered to Mio, "My informant said he is not there anymore."

Mio tells her to have them look for him. Rio finishes and heads out. The guards follow her. The doors close, and Mio is alone again. Mio gets up and heads to a window; she looks out at a town nearby. She reaches out, but a barrier stops her; she becomes depressed.

"Felix, where did you wander off to?" Mio lays her head on the windowsill. She begins to think about her past. The demon race already had problems way before she was born. When the previous Emperor died, it shocked the people. Demons are long-lived like elves.

They later discovered that the king had died from a disease that affected the demon race everywhere. The emperor had a son, Kaminari Nikia; when he ascended, he respected his father's wishes and ruled like him. He kept ties with the human race.

Emperor Kaminari didn't have it easy; his people suffered from the disease and lost trust in him. Famine spread after the crops died out. They were having problems growing food. The lands were terrible, and they lost harvests. Emperor Kaminari had his people produce more from the mines to buy food from the humans.

It took a toll on the workers, and some died from overwork. This caused some nobles to go against him and wanted Emperor Kaminari to figure out a solution. Emperor Kaminari became stressed. He married a noble's daughter to keep the people happy and distract them from problems.

Some luck came from this union, which sparked hope for the people. When the Queen became pregnant, everything changed. The people said it was a blessing from the gods. The whole demon race celebrated. Emperor Kaminari was most excited; Alas, it was taken away from them.

The Queen fell ill with the disease and, at birth, died. The people mourned her death, which Emperor Kaminari took hard. Maids raised Mio while her father worked to keep the kingdom running after the Queen's death problems resurfaced.

Mio grew up watching her father fight with nobles and became angrier than before. She never knew her mother. Mio tried to cheer her father up, but it did not work, and slowly, she drifted away from him. She also became cold-hearted.

When Mio turned sixteen, her father presented her to the nobles. Some nobles sent their sons to court her, but Mio showed her cold personality. She scared away more boys than the frightening beasts of the woods. Emperor Kaminari was disappointed in her.

"Mio, we need to strengthen our ties with the people; you will one day rule next to one of these boys. You will need to know them and choose, or I will choose for you." Mio stayed quiet. Emperor Kaminari made her go everywhere with him. She was to learn how the kingdom worked.
