Summer 1001 – Vinland
As her children got older, Esther couldn't help but feel a mixture of emotions. Relief that they were alive and happy, for the most part. But also fear of what the future would hold.
Her eldest sons were of the age to be married. Finn was long past settling down, yet he worried her less than Elijah. Finn never seemed to find the idea of marriage or children attractive. He'd rather spend his days around the hut, helping her with the odds and ends.
But Elijah wanted it all. He wanted a wife and children. She could see it in his eyes since he was young. The way he would protect his siblings, the way he would teach the village children. He wanted it more than anything and she hated that she had to deny him that life. But she couldn't risk her sister's wrath. Her own daughter was living a life she could only imagine because she had made a deal she hadn't truly thought her sister would claim. She wouldn't subject another child to that. She wouldn't subject her son to the loss of a child in that way.
So they must lose their children before they could become a reality.
Esther looked across the bonfire to see Elijah as he subtly diverted his gaze from the brunette dancing. He likely thought he was being inconspicuous, but she was his mother. She recognized the look of love in her son's eyes. She had been relived when Tatia appeared in town. After what she had done to Astra and Elijah, she couldn't help but feel endlessly guilty at watching her son's despair.
But now he could have everything he wanted.
Tatia already had a young child who would grow knowing Elijah as his father. She simply had to prevent any natural born children and her son would have a beautiful life.
August 2014 – New Orleans, Louisiana
The streets of New Orleans were abuzz with tourists who were getting progressively more intoxicated as the day began to draw to a close. Astra and Freya had to fight their way through the mob of people, aiming for the Lucien's penthouse.
"She said they would wait over here," Astra called out as she gripped the blonde's hand, pulling her to an isolated alleyway. The witches slipped down the alley as they peered around for the other two women.
"They aren't here," Freya stated the obvious. "You don't think..."
She trailed off but Astra didn't need her to say it, they both knew their friends had gone up without them. They had taken too long and their friends had grown impatient.
"Come on." Astra let out a growl of frustration. "Hopefully we aren't too late."
Hurrying out of the alley, the women took off towards the entrance of the building. But it didn't take them long to realize how late they truly were as the elevator neared the top floor. Even without supernatural hearing, they could hear the pained wails three floors down.
