The bonfire began when the boys lit the torches and threw them into the pile of wood. The air was filled with the smell of smoke and sizzling meat as Frypan handed out food and Gally's homemade moonshine. They had all gathered in honor of the newest Greenie, who sat next to Newt bombarding him with a million questions. Madylin found herself sitting with Minho, Ben, Clint, and Jeff, their voices blending together in lively conversation as she sipped on the potent moonshine and watched Gally wrestle with other Gladers in the sand ring.
Suddenly, Jeff nudged her lightly, drawing her attention away from the spectacle before them. She turned to see what he wanted, only to be met with a mischievous smile. "Looks like you've got an admirer," he joked, gesturing towards Thomas. She followed his gaze and saw the boy quickly look away when he realized she had caught him staring.
"So, uh—" Thomas hesitated, clearing his throat before finally asking, "What's her name?"
Newt gave him a look before answering. "That's Madylin. Mady or Mad for short."
Thomas looked back over to the girl who was now play fighting with Gally. "What's the deal with her? Why's she the only girl?" He couldn't help but ask.
Newt shrugged, "No one really knows. She was just put here like the rest of us." He paused for a moment before adding, "Why? Got yourself a crush already?"
Thomas' eyes widened and quickly denied it. "What? No — I was just wondering," he trailed off, "I thought you two were a thing, honestly. Or maybe her and him." Thomas continued, gesturing towards Gally.
Newt chuckled at the idea. "Her and Gally? Never. They're more like brother and sister."
"And what about you two?" Thomas pressed.
Newt rubbed the back of his neck, unsure how to answer. "I thought we were close," he admitted reluctantly. "But lately..." He paused, debating whether it was wise to discuss his complicated love life with the Greenie. "Things change I guess." He cleared his throat and stood up, reaching a hand out to Thomas and helping him up.
Madylin made her way over to where Newt and Thomas were, quickly grabbing Gally by the hand and dragging him along with her.
"Plus, it's the Glade. There's no room for dating."
Newt's comment shot a pang through Madylin's stomach. She stopped in her tracks, her eyes flickering to Gally's face for comfort.
