Everything felt so... hot. 'Fire,' was the only thing that came to mind. Even with her eyes closed tightly, the brightness seemed to penetrate through her eyelids. The smell of smoke and alcohol invaded her nostrils, making it difficult to breathe. She could hear muffled screams from others, but they were drowned out by the roar of fire and the deafening screeches of the Griever that was on top of her.

It was all too much - the chaos, the pain, the fear. At that moment, she wished the Griever would just end it all for her... She was too tired to keep going.

When the Griever noises faded to nothingness, everyone inside the council hall slowly exited, one by one. The Glade was covered in debris, collapsed huts, fire, and bodies— lots of them.

They were met with a few others who had survived, jogging over to them with only stares and silence. Nothing could prepare the Gladers for what happened after. Without a word, Gally's fist met Thomas's face. Thomas recoiled from the blow, clutching his jaw in pain as he tried to process what had just happened.

"What the hell, Gally!?" protests erupted from those who were still left among the group of teens.

"This is all your fault, Thomas," the builder ignored everyone else's comments as he glared at the brunette with anger burning in his eyes. "Just look around!"

"Leave him alone, Gally! It's not his fault!" Minho jumped to Thomas's defense.

"I heard what Alby said - he's one of them!" Gally continued to accuse.

"One of who?!" Newt demanded an explanation.

"He's one of them! They sent him here to destroy everything, and now he has!" His eyes fell onto Madylin's unconscious body in Jeff and Teresa's arms, his gut sinking for a moment. Was she alive? Had he lost his best friend? "Look around Thomas! Look around! This is your fault!" he gestured towards Madylin's unconscious body at the last part. His eyes then landed on Thomas again with pure hatred.

"Maybe he's right—" Thomas started to say before being interrupted by Minho and Newt trying to defend him.

"I need to remember," Thomas spoke up again determinedly as he bent down and picked up the Griever stinger Alby had previously chopped off.

"Not like this," Teresa pleaded with him desperately.

But Thomas shook his head at her as his gaze fell upon Madylin's motionless form. He felt immense regret wash over him before steeling his resolve. "I have to," he stated before plunging the stinger into his own chest, collapsing to the ground in pain. Teresa instinctively let go of Madylin's body and rushed to Thomas' side, leaving Jeff struggling to support the unconscious girl on his own. She pulled the last and final serum they had left out of her pants, and injected him with it, panting heavily as she looked up at the concerned group surrounding them.
