Madylin crouched low, the damp ground biting into her knees in front of Thomas and Teresa's shared cell. Sunlight filtered through cracks in the bamboo doors, casting elongated shadows on the two's faces.
"Listen, what I'm saying is—" Thomas started, his voice low but urgent.
Minho leaned closer, his expression serious. "This place, it's not what we thought it was," Thomas continues, "It's not a prison, it's a test. It all started when we were kids. They'd give us these challenges. They were experimenting on us, and then people started disappearing. Every month, one after the other, like clockwork."
Madylin's eyes widened slightly. Thomas's story checks out from what she could also remember. "That's why we're here. Just like lab rats..." she spoke aloud.
"They were sending them up to the Maze," Newt stated the obvious.
"Yeah, but not all of us," Thomas confirmed, his brow furrowing as he spoke.
Madylin exchanged worried glances with Newt, who knelt beside her, the weight of the conversation pressing down on them both. He seemed to absorb every word, processing the implications with a stoic face.
"What do you mean?" Newt asked.
"Guys, I'm one of them" Thomas admitted, "the people who put you here. I worked with them. I- I watched you guys for years. The entire time you've been here, I was on the other side..." His face was filled with guilt as his eyes trailed to the raven-haired girl, "So were you."
Teresa stood still, unable to comprehend how she could ever be a part of something like this, "What?"
Then, his eyes slowly lifted to Madylin, "And you too."
Madylin lowered her head in response as all eyes fell on her. She wouldn't say she was entirely in shock, but it still pained her hearing it out loud.
"We did this to them," his voice wavered.
Without words, Madylin and Thomas locked eyes as they both shared the guilt that Wicked caused them. Thomas wanted to tell her more. He remembers so much about her, about them. They had known each other a lot better than he had ever thought before the Maze. It explained why he felt the feelings he felt towards her without a clue why.
