Awkwardness.

That's what Madylin felt as she silently walked beside the guard. She hadn't understood why she needed a guard everywhere she went if this place was considered 'safe'.

Yet there he was—the same young guard she had seen when she first woke up here. He was tall, perhaps a year or two older than her, with a perpetually blank expression fixed on his face.

"So..." she began, clearing her throat, "do you have a name?" If he was going to be by her side all the time, she might as well know something about him.

He offered no reply, his eyes locked ahead as he walked. Was he deliberately ignoring her? Why? She hurried to keep pace with his long strides.

"You know, it's polite to respond when someone talks to you," she said, squinting in annoyance. "Considering you haven't had your memory wiped, I'd think you'd understand a bit about human decency."

Still, he said nothing. Madylin huffed and crossed her arms. Perhaps he was deaf? No, that couldn't be—after all, they'd spoken before. Maybe he had suddenly become the most infuriatingly silent person she'd ever met. She was about to launch into another jab when the hallway opened into a large room.

Her private rambling was quickly overtaken by the sound of boisterous conversations. A wave of shyness washed over her as she stood at the entrance, peering into a room filled with teenagers and young adults chatting animatedly and devouring food. The air buzzed with a chaotic energy.

Taking a step back from being overwhelmed, she scanned the room in hopes of spotting the boys and Teresa. She hadn't seen so many different faces of boys and girls before. The Glade, even at its peak, never had this many people. It was...intense.

Almost on cue, all the boys turned their heads, and a collective wave of relief surged through them at the sight of their female Glader. Newt and Minho quickly rose from their seats and rushed over to her.

They reached the girl who had spotted them walking towards her, "Oh, love. You alright?" Newt placed his hands on her shoulders as he checked over her, his brow furrowed with concern. Minho stood next to him with the same worried expression.

The redhead looked around once more, feeling eyes on her, as she nodded slowly, "I think so?" it came out more of a question than a statement. "What's going on? Are these all survivors too?"

"Yeah," a small smile showed up on his lips, "come on. Let's get you some food."

The trio joined the line of people waiting to get food. The aroma of cooked meat, citrus fruit, and fresh baked goods filled the air, a welcome change from the sterile smell of the facility. As she placed a sandwich on her tray alongside a bowl of fruit salad, Madylin asked, "Where are Thomas and Teresa?" She had not seen either of them during her time being escorted around in the facility, and she'd assumed they'd be with the rest of the group. A knot of anxiety tightened in her stomach.
