"Mmh, Dally?" I woke up in his bed to Dally planting gentle kisses on my face.
"Hey Doll face, rise n' shine." I opened my eyes to see Dally's gorgeous face staring down at me and the rays of the sun peaking into his room at Buck Merrill's place. I had been one week since the shooting at our school and since the city got so much attention from the rest of the nation, the city was pressured to shut down the school for two weeks to give us all a breather. Now it was the day after Valentine's Day and boy was it ever blissful. Dally took me out to a restaurant, then a late night drive, and lastly he came home and nearly paralyzed me.
"Fine, hand me my robe, I'm too cold to be walking around half naked." I sighed. Dally grinned at me and nodded before walking to the other side of the room in only his boxers and throwing my new pink and white striped silk robe at me. It was a Valentines Day present that Dally had gotten me, and for him I got a Swiss Army knife with a white Ivory handle. I got up and put my robe on then walked downstairs with Dally by my side for support to the deserted kitchen. "God, Buck is never home. Aren't the people mad that his extravagant parties aren't as often anymore?" I pulled out a mug and began making some tea.
"Eh, Buck's been finding the rodeos a good source of income without having the rest of his teeth knocked out. I guess the people can just suffer." Dally shrugged. I hummed in agreement then nearly chocked on my drink when Dally began making something that looked like baking.
"What are you doing?" I asked him with a confused tone.
"Making pancakes." Dally turned to me and smiled warmly.
"Now hold up, when did you know how to make pancakes?" I walked over to him and hugged Dally's waist from behind.
"I always could, my mom taught me. I just never got the chance to make them, being in jail or homeless and all." Dally chuckled lightly.
"You're cute, you know that Dal?" I let go of him and sat on the counter top sipping my tea as I watched him make breakfast.
"Hey, I ain't cute." Dally cockily smirked at me with some swagger in his voice.
"Nah, you're hot. Steaming, smoking, so very hot." Dally came over to me and positioned himself in between my legs and began kissing my lips passionately. "Oh and Dal, do you wanna know what else is gonna be smoking?" I pulled away briefly.
"What?" He neared his face back to mine so that our noses were touching.
"The pancakes." I threw my hands up and giggled as he loudly swore then flipped the pancakes over hurriedly. I didn't stop giggling which made Dally cock an eyebrow at me and put a hand on his hip with the spatula in the other hand. Normally, with anyone else Dally would have smacked them silly if they laughed at him, but I was Dally's girl. Sure, here and there we'd have our disagreements or argue over something, but he wouldn't hit me, ever.
"You think that's funny, sweetheart?" Dally let a corner of his mouth curl into a smirk while getting plates out and putting the surprisingly perfectly cooked pancakes on the plates.
"Yeah, I do." I said while calming my giggles. Dally sighed happily.
"Doll, if you were anyone else you'd be getting pummelled by now, y'know that?" He glanced me and gave me a peck on the lips.
"Well technically you did pummel me last night..." I teasingly hit his chest.
"Speaking of, how are you feeling? I didn't go to hard on you, did I?" Dally got out the syrup from the pantry. I hopped off of the counter, slightly regaining my ability to walk.
"Nah, you're good. Although I am a little sore." I pinched my fingers to accentuate the 'little' part. Dally cringed at the sore part and looked down at the ground in guilt.
"Sorry, baby. I hate seeing you hurt." I hobbled over to him and kissed him on the cheek.
"Eh, it's not that bad. I like it, it's all worth it." I tried to lighten the mood. Dally smiled at me and wrapped his arms around my waist.
"What would I do without you?" His rich brown eyes pooled affection into mine.
"Hmmm, let's see...You'd be single, lonely, and a wreck of an eighteen year old." I said. Dally liked this answer but pretended to be hurt briefly before attacking my neck with his soft lips.
"Okay! Okay! Easy there, I have enough hickeys for now." I laughed while Dally pulled away pouting over the fact he couldn't mark me up even more than he already did. I waved him off before snatching up my pancakes and sitting at the dinner table that was commonly used as a beer pong table or bar. Dally joined me and we conversed in everything we could think of, the past, the present, the future, the whole gist of it. Later on that day, I came home to find my Dad home.
"Hey, kid where have you been?" He looked at me from the couch while he was reading the paper. I was holding a large leather tote bag containing my clothes from the night before and the robe I had received, plus some really saucy lingerie. My outfit consisted of a red turtleneck and pleated white mini-skirt with my usual Mary-Janes and lacy white ankle socks.
"Oh, spending the night with the girls. All the single ladies, y'know." I was lying through my teeth but it was surprisingly believable.
"Alright, well you scared me to pieces when I came home and you were gone." He went back to reading the paper. I nodded and bolted upstairs, flopping on my bed and exhaling loudly. I knew my Mom was at work, but my Dad said he was going to Denver for a week, but he came back early. It was a pretty close call, considering Dally wanted to walk me home, but I told him I'd be alright. Little thing about being his girl: Dally is overprotective as hell. Once, I went to one of Buck Merrill's parties and this drunken asshole started grabbing my ass and wouldn't let go, but when Dally found out he nearly killed the guy before taking me upstairs and checking to see if he hurt me. I can still remember him holding me and promising that he'd let no one touch me as we dozed off to the loud music from the party down below. I felt horrible though, since J basically pulled Dally away from his eighteen year old birthday bash, where every hood, greaser, and JD in town crowded Buck's house celebrating their dear friends big day. Of course Curly Shepherd was there but he was scared his big brother and sister would beat his ass if he tried anything funny. I was zoning out, thinking about these memories until I got a sudden feeling of dread and sickness in my stomach. It wasn't PMS cramps, and I know I didn't eat anything funky, but it was as if something bad was about to happen. I felt almost nauseous before I went to bed, and kept on wondering What's going on? Well, the next day I decided to stop by the Curtis house since it had been a couple of days.
"Hey y'all! Why's everyone looking at me like that?" I skipped in through the screen door first thing in the morning and saw the pale faces of everyone in the gang staring at me with pity and dread. Dally's was the most notable, his eyes showing slight fear that only I could pick out of his eyes.
"Y/n, listen...Dally needs to talk to you." Johnny was avoiding eye contact with me.
"Uh yeah, okay. Dal, let's step out side for a minute." Dally followed me out to the front porch.
"Y/n, baby, I got a letter. It's from the government guys and they-they're telling me I'm of age and in the right health for the draft. They said they'll take me in three weeks to go to boot camp for me to fight in Vietnam." Dally stared into my eyes with a pained and fearful expression but his voice remained calm.
"N-no. No, no, no! God, Dally they can't take you! I already lost my cousin to that stupid war, I-I can't loose you!" I broke down in tears as my knees buckled and I dropped to the ground, Dally quickly kneeling down to meet me and grasping me in his arms. I held him tight and cried and cried until I tried to pull myself together when I heard the gang run out to help out.
"Can we get some time alone?" Dally sternly told them.
"Sure thing, Dally. Boys, you heard him. C'mon." Darry ushered everyone back into the house, I didn't even look up to see them. Dally tilted my chin up to face him.
"Now Doll, I've been shot before, I've been beaten before, I've been scarred before by knives bullets and busted bottles. Now I got three weeks, and in those three weeks, I'll make sure you got plenty to remember me by before I come back. Now when I do, I don't give a shit if your parents hate me or don't know about us, I'll marry you. I think you're the one thing keeping me afloat, so I'm actually gonna get hitched." I looked up at Dally and immediately pulled him into a passionate kiss. He stood up and pulled me up with him, not breaking our kiss. Our lips were locked together for what seemed like and eternity until we heard giggling coming from behind us. When we turned to look, there was Two-Bit with a camera in hand with Ponyboy and Johnny red in the face and Steve and Soda making devious faces as if to say 'they've definitely fucked.'
"What's so funny." I sassed at them playfully.
"Hey Two-Shit! Whaddya doin' with that camera!?" Dally angrily shrieked in with his New York accent coming in thick. I sniffled and forced a laugh as Dally began chasing Two-Bit around the street and Ponyboy and Jonny coming up beside me on either side.
"Don't worry, he'll be okay. It's Dally. Roughing as nails." Ponyboy patted me on the shoulder.
"Pony's right. Hell, I fear for whoever runs into him during the war." Johnny smiled hopefully to me.
"I sure hope so, boys. I sure hope so." I put my arms around their shoulders as the sun set, tears still brimming my eyes.
