~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Chris had always been a bit unsure about the paranormal world. He scoffed at the idea of ghosts and spirits, dismissing them as fantasies of extremely imaginative people. But when Sam and Colby proposed an experiment to explore a supposedly haunted hotel, curiosity got the better of him, and he and his brothers reluctantly agreed to join them. As they entered the abandoned hotel, a chill ran down Chris's spine. The air was heavy with dread, and every creak of the floorboards echoed like a warning. Chris clung to Matt's arm, teeth chattering in fear. "You cold, Chris?" Matt asked.
"Um... Ye- yeah, a bit," he lied. Truth was, his entire body was shaking, he was terrified.
Sam and Colby, armed with cameras and EVP recorders, were eager to capture evidence of any sort of supernatural activity. At first, Chris tried to keep his composure, but as they explored deeper into the hotel, his nerves began to show more and more. Shadows danced in the corners of his vision, and strange whispers seemed to follow them wherever they went. Chris was being incredibly clingy, Nick and Matt not knowing why.
Then they reached the 5th floor—the most haunted part of the hotel. As they set up their equipment, Chris's heart hammered in his chest. "Matty, can you... um- hold my hand?" Chris asked shyly.
"Yeah, Chr-" Suddenly, a loud crash echoed through the room they were in, causing Chris to jump out of his skin.
His hands shook as he clutched onto Nick's arm, his breath coming in ragged gasps. "I-I can't do this," Chris stammered, his voice trembling with fear. "I want to leave. Please, guys, we need to go." he pleaded to his brothers.
Sam and Colby exchanged concerned glances, realizing how terrified Chris truly was.
They quickly gathered their things and made their way out of the hotel, Chris clinging to his brothers for support. Once they were outside, Chris collapsed onto the ground, tears streaming down his face, breathing rapidly. "I... I can't breathe," he sobbed, hiding his face in shaking hands.
"What's wrong with him?" Sam asked worriedly.
Colby elbowed him in the side. "Shut up, Sam."
"He's having a panic attack," Matt said to Sam. "Chrissy, look at me, you're okay." Matt cupped Chris's face with his hands. "Take a deep breath, bub."
Chris tried to respond, but his throat felt constricted, his words getting stuck in his throat. "I... I'm- I can't..." he choked on a sob.
Nick joined Matt beside Chris, his brow furrowed with worry. "Chris, babe, you're safe. Just focus on your breathing, okay? In and out, nice and slow."
Chris closed his eyes and tried to follow his brother's instructions, inhaling deeply through his nose and exhaling slowly through his mouth. The first few breaths sounded like whimpers as Chris tried to control himself. It was a struggle, each breath feeling like it required a huge effort, but he continued to breathe through the panic. Matt placed a hand on Chris's back, offering silent reassurance, while Nick sat down beside him.
Chris felt stupid for letting his fear get the better of him, but the terror of the experience was too much to handle. Sam and Colby knelt beside him, offering words of comfort and reassurance. They wrapped him in a tight hug, letting him know that they were there for him no matter what. "It's okay, Chris," Sam said softly, brushing a stray tear from Chris's cheek. "You don't have to be brave all the time. We're just glad you're okay now."
"Thank you... I'm- I think paranormal shit isn't for me." he sniffled, earning laughs from the boys.
"It's okay, Chris. At least you tried it!" Colby reassured.
The car hummed softly as Matt navigated through the quiet streets, the gentle glow of streetlights casting a comforting warmth over the interior. Chris sat in the passenger seat, still recovering from the panic attack, while Nick leaned against the window in the back, lost in his thoughts. The tension that had filled the air during Chris's panic attack had dissipated, replaced now by a quiet calmness as they made their way home. Matt stole a glance at Chris, looking concerned. "You doing okay there, buddy?"
Chris managed a small nod, though the weariness in his eyes spoke volumes. "Yeah, I think so. Thank you guys for... you know, for being there." he said softly.
"Always, Chrissy. I know how you felt, I was kind of scared too, honey. " Nick said from the backseat, as Matt nodded in understanding, reaching over to hold Chris's hand.
Chris's lips curled into a grateful smile as he took Matt's hand, feeling the weight of the day slowly lifting off his shoulders. As they continued their drive home, the familiar sights and sounds of their neighbourhood passed by outside. As Matt guided the car around the final corner, their house coming into view, Chris couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude wash over him. Gratitude for Sam and Colby, and his brothers especially, who had stood by him through his fear.
With a tired sigh, Chris settled back into his seat, knowing that no matter what tomorrow might bring, he would always have Matt and Nick by his side.
