"Damn," Rose cursed eloquently as she hit the side of the iPod even though she knew it wouldn't do anything. "I just got this thing and it's already glitching up."
Phil didn't have any sympathy to spare for her. "Maybe it's karma for stealing it."
"Oh, and you're mister perfectly-morally-upright?" she sassed him in reply. She shut off the iPod and waited thirty seconds before she turned it back on. "If you give me a break about the taking-it thing, I'll let you listen to it for an hour."
"No dice, Daly," her coworker said with a scoff. "And that's not just because it's broken now."
The brunette huffed irritably as the screen lit up, only to show that the pixels still wouldn't come into focus. "It's not broken, it's just a little static-y. I wonder if any of our other tech is acting up."
The older man gave her a considering look, dropping some of the sarcasm from his tone. "Maybe it has something to do with the energy the hammer is giving off. Space particles probably don't blend well with our devices."
Rose squinted at the iPod screen with frustration etched on her features. "You think so? I mean, we've been around plenty of other alien tech without any issues before."
"We've had the same amount of experience in dealing with aliens, Daly, and I wouldn't call it 'plenty,'" he countered. "Besides, our tech was less sophisticated back then; its lack of complexity probably helped combat the interference."
Their musings were interrupted by the announcement in their comms: Agent down. We've got a perimeter breach.
Rose sighed, groaning slightly at the news. She shoved the iPod into the pocket of her combat suit. "One night. All I want is one night off. What could the world possibly want us to deal with now?"
Phil patted her shoulder in a way that only came out as a little patronizingly. "That's the cost of being some of Fury's top agents. Never a quiet moment."
"I totally should've taken his offer to be the Director when Peg stepped down," she grumbled, the blare of the alarms almost drowning out her complaint.
Phil chuckled at the woman's griping, shaking his head. "Oh, come on, Daly. You really think being the Director would give you a break? If anything, you'd have even less downtime. Fury's shoes aren't exactly meant for lounging around."
She only rolled her eyes. "Yeah, but at least I'd get to delegate all the annoying stuff to someone else."
He raised an eyebrow, a smirk playing at the corners of his lips. "And who would that unlucky someone be? Me?"
"Hey, I'd put you first in line for a promotion. Why do you think so little of me?"
"I just know you that well," was his snarky answer.
Their banter was brought to an end as they became focused on the situation at hand, the familiar camaraderie turning into formal efficiency. They were on the second level of the investigation facility so there was not as much commotion, but they had a limited view as well. Phil radioed their sharpshooter. "I need eyes up high, with a gun."
