Mason turned to his side on his bed hammock. Over in a smaller hammock hung on the wall was Lex, fast asleep with a nose bubble puffing in and out.

He had longed to finally reach the age where Nix, his father, would allow him to go on an adventure in the world.

He recalled what he was told earlier in the afternoon.

“That blade belonged to the High Elves, the ones I told you stories about. It was once a complete blade that could bend reality itself and the fact that you have found it without it rejecting you by zapping you with the energy means something important is about to happen in the world.”

He grabbed a journal off his desk and handed it to Mason. When he opened it, the pages were mostly blank, except for one that detailed a map of the known world.

“My great-grandfather entrusted this to my father before he passed. He said when I came of age he’d give it to me. I didn’t understand why. He said I had to look into its secrets myself, but I was only able to get that one page to appear when I got close to that ruin you visited. When I was young it was sealed with a barrier, but when I got close this page appeared.”

“…”

He told them that they had to travel to Volt City to meet an old friend of his who knew more about the blade, meaning they would have to get ready to depart as soon as tomorrow.

Mason would have been excited, but instead, he was conflicted. He didn’t know whether or not to be happy he was going on an adventure or not, but when he touched that blade, he felt someone’s presence. It appeared close but far and that feeling hadn’t left him since.

He sat up, grabbing the crystal off his desk and made it form.

He gave it a few light swings. Nothing shot out or anything. He didn’t have Lexus awake to channel energy into it yet but there was still some energy in it, at least from what he could tell.
Pressing the button on his Echo device, he made it form back into a crystal by sending out a wave that canceled the crystal energy, reverting it.

“It’ll make sense in the morning, I hope.”

Sleep didn’t come easy, but when it did, it felt amazing.

Little did I know at that time what I had gotten into was something that would change my life forever.

I woke up with my mind still filled with anxiety.

I got up, seeing Lex still sleeping soundly.

I wanted to go back to sleep but I needed tea.

Walking upstairs I turned on the echo oven burner, lit easily with gas and a flint-built-in.

I poured water in the teapot before setting it on. I let out a sigh.

“Couldn’t sleep?”

I turned. It was Nix. I eyed his scaled pot belly.

“Yeah, sort of.”

“You last week would’ve been excited to go on an adventure.”

“I know. It’s just…you said I was allowed when I was 20. Now I’m leaving a week after my birthday.”

Nix came over and put an arm over his shoulder.

“You’re a strong boy, Mason. I’m worried about you going and I would go with you, but I need to do some elder duties in the village before I could even think of going anywhere.”

“Dad…thank you.”

I hugged him. He looked surprised, then smiled and hugged back.

“You’re a blessing to both me and Ruby, you and Lexus.”

I felt more brave sleeping after that.

Fear was natural and we all faced it every single day.

I had to face it now more than ever…

When morning came, me and Lexus started finishing packing.

I brought clothes while Lexus packed his many different energy harnesses.

They allowed someone who wore them to provide someone energy to their Echo weapon.

Normally the people of the village help with a ceremony for those leaving to see the world since it would be a while before they come back, but instead, only Nix came to see us off, along with Naba, a water dragon girl who did swimming lessons for the village community.

“Take your boat to the south side of the mainland. Naba here will go with, but once you reach the land, she’ll take your boat back here. I know you prefer going through the deep part of the ocean, but the shallow ends will work for now since the ocean has been a little dangerous as of late and I don’t want you losing your lives to a storm.

Lex and I nodded after hugging our dad one last time.

After that, we got on my boat and took off while Naba swam alongside.
