"Alexandrea, you're awfully quiet!" James roared as he stomped in my direction. "Shite! Did she run away?"
"What do you mean she ran away?!" Jack hollered.
"I saw her over here!" James looked around the tree where I was standing moments before.
I found a small spot in between two large chunks of rock and forced myself into the dark hole. My shoulders were killing me, but I wanted to endure the pain for the greater good.
James passed me by in hot pursuit, while Peterson stood right in front of me. "Darnit James! The lord cursed me with a stupid brother! You should've made her stay put!"
"She couldn't have gone far!"
Jack swore, catching the attention of them both, "She got away!" He held up the restraints I cut and left. "Without her, there's no way we can keep that beast of a man tamed!"
"Want us to disable him?" Peterson pointed to the rifle in one of the men's grasp.
"Fool! If we put a mark on him, the savage loses his value! It's not our job to put our hands on him, but the buyers." Jack ran a hand through his hair, frustrated.
"Relax, Jacky." Peterson slapped his hand on his shoulders, which Jack shrugged off.
"Don't Jacky, me! If it weren't for you and your idiot of a brother, we wouldn't—"
"Alexandrea may have gotten out of the rope, but she couldn't have gone far. We're in the middle of the forest, surrounded by all kinds of creatures. Who knows what she'll encounter? She'll come running back to us once she realizes how feeble she is. All we have to do is wait."
"And what if the savage—"
"We just have to tell him that we're holding her hostage. As Long As he keeps calm, nothing will—"
One of the men walked up to Jack and frantically began speaking in another language. Jack's face went more pale than before, which I thought was impossible.
"What? What did he say?" James huffed.
"The savage is gone!" Jack and the three rushed back over to the wagon.
I blinked in surprise. Did Yuxuan wake up? Where did he go? Did he leave? Or was he hiding?
There weren't many places to hide. I was worried he'd be found.
I felt tempted to step out and show myself, but the moment I slid my feet forward, I felt an arm wrap around the front of my neck.
I was dragged back, deeper into the rocks. My feet scraped against the stone, and my shoulders somehow managed to fit through the crevice. I shrieked but a hand covered my mouth to silence me.
I was pulled into some sort of underground cave, and my back was pushed against a solid wall. I felt a hard muscular body against mine, and strands of long wavy hair rub against my neck.
"Yu..." I reached up and touched the figure's face. Sharp jaw, tough smooth skin, and sharp nose. Traits of him. "Yuxuan, is that you—"
His hand slapped over my mouth again, and he wrapped his arms around my waist. Although I couldn't see him, I was sure it was Yuxuan.
Jack's shadow loomed over us. Finally, they lit torches.
With the beam of the flame, I could see the man in front of me. I felt immediate comfort in knowing that my plan had worked. Yuxuan woke up and got away!
"I'm so relieved." I brushed his hair out of his face. "We've got to get you out of here," I whispered.
"Sun." Yuxuan looked up at the sky. "Sun come up."
