It's driving me out of my mind
That's why it's hard for me to find
Can't get it outta my head
Miss her, kiss her, love her, wrong move you're dead

That girl is poison

Unrequited love is such a sad concept.

To think that one person could love another so much that they would be willing to sacrifice themselves for them, but never get their love in return. Sometimes, they never do notice that you love them until too late. Other times, they know and want to let you down gently. Rejection is a thing no one wants to hear, but it is something that must be done in order to grow.

In Hotaru's case, she was always infatuated with the six eyed demon that lived in her home.

It was small at first, being that he did train her to master the blade and would patch her up when she was done. Her own father didn't even do things like that, and it was greatly appreciated. Other times, she would catch him playing his flute, closing her eyes as she appreciated his music. At one point, she would spy on him from the shadows and watch him train. Her heart fluttered a bit, wanting some form of love that her father would not provide her.

She fashioned herself to fit his style and aesthetic to gain his eye. Her short hair was brushed and glossed to reflect the moonlight. Her kimonos were now purple and black with lunar designs. She even started to wear a bit of makeup to showcase her outer beauty. Kyojin would help her practice what to say when he came around as well.

One evening, while the moon was full, she came into the garden with a determined look on her face. Every top of the 23rd hour, he would wander the garden to take a break from hunting down the Blue Spider Lily. His eyes would carry a sense of longing and sadness whenever he did so. She was ready this time, ready to profess her love and have him return the gesture. The age gap was nothing to her as she could warp her body to become the ideal woman for him. She sensed him deep within the garden as she giddily made her way over to him. The Whispers, those nosy flowers, were doing their late night gossip. She never did pay them any mind, finding their gossip asinine and uninteresting. However, on this particular night, she happened upon a tidbit that made her worry.

"That six-eyed one is at her coffin again!"
"He's always coming here to speak with her. How romantic."
"Hush! Do you want to be plucked? The king would be furious if he knew!"

No...it couldn't be true! Surely, it was a mistake of the ear, a slip of the tongue! No way could her Koku-Chan be in love with her mother of all people! Didn't she have enough suitors to court her that she could leave her lover alone? Her feet moved her quickly through the scented trees of the garden to where her mother slept. To her outrage, there he was, standing over her glass coffin. His face wasn't sullen, nor was he weeping in sorrow like most. There was a smile on his lips, eyes full of pure love, and his hands brushed delicately on the glass. He didn't even look like his usual stoic self.

For a moment, he gave off the aura of a human man in love with a beautiful princess.

"You haven't aged a day since we brought you here." His voice barely heard. "Every day since then has been a constant battle of breaking you out and wrapping my arms around you. What my foolish brother did I can never forgive. Those demon slayers will pay for doing this."

His body language shifted as he knelt before her. "And yet, despite the fact you have not truly married him, I still find myself pining for you. Ever since that night in the cave when we were alone, I often wondered if I was your first choice. If I had met you in your human life, would I have married you? Every smile, every laugh, every small moment together has been ingrained upon my soul. Yet, you chose the master and left me wandering behind you. Even if I can never have you, I shall be your guardian and steadfast companion. I shall let no harm befall your very form. That is my promise to you."
