Gimli, as a dwarf, eventually grows old and sick, while Legolas stays a young and healthy elf. When Gimli is on his deathbed he sends for his elf friend. Legolas gets there at once and admits his regret of not spending enough time with his mortal friend. He keeps apologizing until Gimli is unconscious. Then he argues with Thranduil until the Elf King lets his son travel to the Undying Lands with Gimli.
