As Kamari sat in the chair, dealing with the devastating loss of her family, she suddenly felt a strange sensation wash over her. The throbbing pain in her arm, a constant reminder of her infection, disappeared entirely, replaced by a sense of numbness. How long has she been staring out this window, minutes, hours, days?
She looked at the time on her phone, it had been an hour and a half, was she disassociating for almost two hours straight?
"I didn't turn..." She mumbled.
Confusion mingled with disbelief clouded her mind as she tentatively removed the makeshift bandages. She touched the spot where the bite had once been, once been, finding only unblemished skin in its place. It was as if the injury, the bite, had never existed, leaving her both baffled and unnerved.
In addition to the physical change, Kamari noticed something else was different. The overwhelming emotions that had consumed her just moments before – the grief, the fear, the despair – were suddenly absent, replaced by an eerie sense of detachment.
Though initially disconcerted by these sudden changes, Kamari couldn't deny the sense of relief that washed over her. Without the weight of her emotions bearing down on her, she felt strangely liberated, as if a burden had been lifted from her shoulders.
She welcomed the newfound sense of clarity and detachment, Kamari rose to her feet, her mind buzzing with questions. What had caused her injuries to heal so miraculously? And what had happened to her emotions?
As Kamari processed the bizarre changes she had experienced, the sound of commotion outside the classroom snapped her back to reality. Peering cautiously through the barricaded door window, she saw a group of students desperately fighting off a horde of zombies, their yells echoing through the halls. Among the group, she spotted her best friend, Darius, he really came for her, he was ok.
Without hesitation, Kamari sprang into action, removing the barricade and grabbing the bat. She rushed to help the group, wielding the bat, her new personal weapon. With precise strikes and calculated movements, she fought with as much strength as she could muster, taking down the undead with surprising skill and efficiency.
"Ahhhhhh!"
She glanced to the side noticing a girl was pinned beneath a zombie, barely keeping it from taking a chunk out of her. Kamari kicked the zombie before her in the leg, bringing it to its knees and smashing it across the head. She then spun around, running over to the girl and bringing her bat down on its head. Blood splattered across the girl's face and Kamari helped her to her feet, nodding when she thanked her.
Thanks to Kamari's assistance, the group was able to fend off the zombies, but not without two casualties. As the adrenaline of the fight began to wane, Kamari's heart finally calmed as she realized Darius was not among them.
With a heavy sigh, she led the survivors back to the safety of the classroom, before more came. One girl had hurt her ankle while running here so Kamari helped her sit at a desk. As the group huddled together in the relative safety of the classroom, Kamari showed them where she was keeping the supplies.
As the group settled into the relative safety of the classroom, Kamari's eyes met those of her best friend Darius. Kamari started to check him for any injuries or signs of infection before sighing in relief. Darius chuckled and pulled her into a hug, which she returned before hitting him in the chest.
"I thought something happened to you, what the fuck happened," Kamari asked.
"Mark dumb ass kept opening the window and fucking with the zombies and one bit him. He turned in like a minute and shit got crazy, I dropped my phone trying to get him off Monique," He sucked his teeth remembering the incident.
