As the night wore on, Kamari continued to keep watch, thinking of various things that could go wrong and their solutions. She was an overthinker, always have been, she was the type of person to think of and plan responses to questions that haven't even been asked yet. Like when she got bit, when she didn't turn her immediate next thought was to hide it and think of a lie in case someone saw it.
Glancing over at Lyric, who lay on a the teacher's desk beside her, Kamari noticed that she was still awake, her eyes wide with alertness as she stared out into the darkness. Sensing her restlessness, Kamari turned so she was now looking at Lyric.
"You good?" Kamari asked lowly, her voice barely above a whisper.
Lyric sat up and forced a small smile, "Yeah, I'm ight. Can't sleep," she sighed.
Kamari nodded in understanding, recognizing the familiar signs of anxiety, "Yeah, I'm surprised they can,"
As they sat together in silence, watching over the others, Kamari felt an odd sense of protectiveness. It's not like she knew most of the people here yet she felt like she needed to protect them from everything that may be a threat. That was unlike her, she would never risk her safety, her life, for someone else.
She didn't even think she could take a bullet for her mom if she was being completely honest. Yet here she was feeling like giving her life was the least she could do for the group. Ever since she got bit she's been...different yet for some reason she felt these changes were a good thing.
"Hey Mari," Lyric pulled her out of her thoughts "What happened with you? I ain't never seen you this quiet, plus You and Jasmine stayed together so it threw me off not seeing her here,"
Kamari kept looking forward, "Nah I'm always quiet, I just get loud at school and shit. When I'm not here I barely talk," she laughed.
"Why?"
"I'm in Ms. J's class for a reason too," She laughed dryly "My dad would beat my ass just because I didn't say bless you when he sneezed. He scared me so badly that I wouldn't even smile when he was around cause I thought he'd hit me. So I didn't talk unless he spoke to me first so now I'm just so used to not talking,"
Kamari cracked her neck, "You see how mean I look, when I'm quiet, if I'm not loud and laughing all the time y'all probably wouldn't talk to me," she snorted.
Lyric laughed, "Yeah I'm not gone hold you, I did think yo ass was mean as hell and you is, but you ain't mean to me so we coo,"
"Yeah Ight," Kamari laughed "Jas them was here, we ran in here when shit went down but some zombies got in. I helped them hoes get out and they left me here," She clicked her tongue "They dead now so I'm coo off them,"
"Wait they left you? In a room full of zombies?? And you made it out? Bitch you power ranger?" Lyric asked.
Kamari choked on a laugh, "Shit I might be, ion even know how I did that,"
Lyric yawned, "Ight I'm tired now, this desk gon have my neck fucked up,"
"You wanna lie on me?" Kamari offered "I ain't going to sleep no time soon,"
"You dead ass?"
"Yeah,"
Lyric got up with her blanket, a small smile tugging at the corners of her lips as she curled up in Kamari's lap, wrapping herself in the blanket and getting comfortable. With a contented sigh, she closed her eyes, the tension melting away from her body as she drifted off to sleep.
