i quickly left the restaurant, speed-walking with tears streaming down my face. by the time i hit the street, i was full-on sobbing, my chest aching from the weight of it all.

"y/n!" a familiar voice called out behind me. i froze for a second before turning to see regulus just a few steps away, his face filled with worry.

i turned back around and kept walking, ignoring him as the cold wind stung my cheeks. his hurried footsteps grew louder behind me until he finally jumped in front of me, blocking my path.

"woah, woah. please, hear me out." regulus panted, clearly out of breath. he reached for my hand, but i yanked it away.

"hear you out?" i snapped, my voice trembling with anger. "after i was left in that restaurant for an hour?" my chest heaved as I pushed his hand away, tears blurring my vision.

"i know." he sighed deeply. "and i'm so sorry. let me fix this."

"no." i shook my head, my voice breaking. "these past few days, you've been distant. it's like you didn't even want to talk to me. i made this reservation for us so we could try to bring back what we had—so we could have our spark again. but now..." i trailed off, sobbing uncontrollably. "it just feels like you've completely lost feelings for me."

"no, no. baby, no." regulus's voice was firm yet soft, his eyes wide with desperation. "i haven't lost feelings for you. not at all. it's just been tough these past few days."

"and you didn't want to talk to me about it? you couldn't even communicate?" i asked, my voice trembling. "you could've just told me you wanted space. it's not that hard." i looked down at the ground, wiping away my tears with shaky hands.

regulus reached for my hand again, but i stepped back, pulling away.

"y/n, please..." he whispered, his voice barely audible.

"i think i need time from this." i said softly, my voice cracking as i wiped away more tears.

"wait. no, please don't break up with me." his voice rose in panic, his expression pleading. "please, i wouldn't know what to do without you."

"no, not in a million years." i reassured him, my heart breaking as i saw the fear in his eyes. "i just need time. then we can talk about it, okay?" i asked, my voice gentle.

he nodded softly, his shoulders sagging in relief. "let me walk you back to the castle at least. it's freezing."

i nodded, and we began walking together. the silence between us was heavy, broken only by the sound of our footsteps on the frosty ground. a few times, he tried to reach for my hand, but i pulled away, still too hurt to let him in.

"how much space do you need?" regulus asked quietly as we stepped inside the castle.

"maybe until tomorrow." i replied, my voice distant. "right now, i just need time."

"okay." he said softly, his voice filled with regret. "i'm so sorry, love. i love you."

"it's fine." i sighed, brushing past him. but deep down, it still hurt.

the next morning, i woke up to an empty spot beside me. usually, regulus slept with me, but the past few days, he'd been staying in his own bed. the absence of his warmth felt colder than the chill of the night before.

i sat up, running my fingers through my hair before getting out of bed. i went to the bathroom and went through my morning routine, washing away the remnants of yesterday's tears. after brushing my teeth, i slipped into my uniform, did my makeup, and tied my hair half-up, securing it with a green bow.

with one last glance in the mirror, i left my dorm and headed down to the great hall. my friends were already seated with the boys, their laughter and chatter filling the air.

i sighed, steeling myself before walking over to them. "hey, guys." i said, forcing a smile.

"hey, y/n! come on. i saved you a plate before the boys could demolish everything." julia grinned, sliding a plate over to me.

"thank you." i said, managing a small, genuine smile as i sat next to her.

across from me sat regulus, his eyes fixed on me. his gaze was heavy, filled with guilt and longing. i avoided his stare, focusing on my toast instead.

as i nibbled on my food, i joined the conversation here and there, trying to appear normal. just as i finished my plate, the bell rang, signaling the start of class.

i got up and reached for my books, but someone beat me to it. i looked up to find regulus holding them, his expression soft.

"come on. we have class together anyway. let me carry them." he said gently.

i nodded, walking with him to the end of the long table before we headed to class together.

"can we talk about... what happened?" regulus asked cautiously as we walked.

"yeah." i said softly, crossing my arms.

he took a deep breath. "i'm really sorry, y/n. and i feel so guilty about everything. you were right—I should've communicated. i don't want to keep hurting you like this. let me make it up to you. we can go back to the restaurant, and i'll buy you anything. absolutely anything you want."

a small smile tugged at my lips. "thank you for apologizing." i said, grabbing his hands. "i forgive you."

"thank god." he sighed in relief, his shoulders relaxing. "these past few days without you by my side have been miserable."

"i love you." i said, my voice barely above a whisper.

"i love you too." he said, his voice filled with emotion.

he leaned in, and as his lips met mine, the world seemed to melt away.
