CHAPTER NINE
TRUST

In the year: 1940

ROSALIE Hale hated Thea Quarts.

When Thea first arrived close to a year ago, Rosalie believed she brought nothing but trouble to her family.

But after learning about Thea's past, Rosalie realized that Thea was the one in trouble and the one who needed saving.

But it's hard to save someone who thinks they're incapable of being saved.

"What's a pretty girl like you doing alone in a bar?" A handsome young man sits on the stool next to Thea.

Thea examined him, he was dressed in a tailored suit made of the finest fabrics, his shoes were polished and his teeth were a bright white. His blonde hair was slicked back, one singular string hanging in front of his forehead.

Thea smiled at the man's charm.

What is she doing?

"You seem sad, beautiful." Thea lets the man push her hair behind her ear, "How about I take care of you, make you feel better?"

"Joseph Gaven." The man introduces himself, "And you?"

"...Thea." She tells him. "Just Thea."

"Well, Thea, how about I buy you a drink and then we can go somewhere more private."

Thea grins, her golden hues glazing over him, "I don't drink."

"Then why are you in a bar?" He chuckles.

Thea slowly stood up, searching the bustling bar filled with men, women, and alcohol. She lets her lips graze against his lips, sending chills down his spine, "because I knew you would be here."

Joseph chuckles lowly, taking her hand and leading her to the back room. The muscular man standing by the door looks to Joseph, "Nice to see you, Mr. Gaven. Enjoy your experience."

"You known around here?" Thea says as they enter a room with a lowlight.

"Something like that." Joseph wastes no time connecting their lips.

The kiss was sloppy and a lack of passion and it was pissing Thea off. She pushes him back to the couch as he loosens his tie.

A wallet falls out of his pocket, landing in the middle of them. There was a picture of a blonde woman posing for a camera with a toddler in her arms. "Who is this?" Thea picks it up.
