*Y/N's POV*I can't be mistaken.
Lisa really said I can't remember Jennie because of my accident. But what did she mean by that?
"Wha– Lisa, what did you say?"
"What?" She questioned sluggishly.
"About my accident. You said... I couldn't remember Jennie because of it." I asked impatiently. "What is that supposed to mean?"
"It's true! You don't remember your high school days." She responded with a hiccup. "Unnie was very sad when she realized you didn't remember her. And she still blames herself for that. That's why she's scared about telling you the truth."
What truth?
What is she saying?
It doesn't make any sense. My high school days? It's true that I can't remember the four years of my life. But Jennie—
Wait..., is it possible that the girl in my dreams is really her?
Coming to think of it, Jennie and I are of the same age. And she was indeed in New Zealand during the years I can't recall. What if we had really met?
Lisa was pretty wasted as the night rolled on and in no state to answer properly if I had asked her anything more. I got her back to their dorm before going to my apartment. But I couldn't sleep. I tossed and turned in my bed for a long time, thinking about how I could figure out if Jennie and I had met.
Around four, I called Uncle Junyoung.
"Y/N? Is everything okay, Kiddo?" He asked me tiredly.
"Um, yeah, yeah! I– Sorry for calling you at this hour, Uncle. I– I just... I have a question for you."
"What is it, Kiddo?" He asked me concernedly.
"Nothing to worry about, Uncle. I– I just need to know the name of the school I went to during the years I can't remember."
"Why do you want to know that now?"
"I... uh, um, I might have met a classmate... so I wanted to be sure." I lied.
"Oh."
"Yeah. And I can't ask Mom and Dad because they might start worrying that I am forcing my memories again." He probably bought it.
"I understand, Kiddo! But it's worrying me that you called me four in the morning to ask me this." I gulped. How do I explain that? "Do I smell a possible crush?" He teased.
I scratched my nape with a nervous chuckle.
"Well, anyway, Kiddo. You went to the Waikowhai Intermediate School in Auckland."
Jennie and I went to the same school.
There were high chances that we were classmates. Then, why didn't she say anything?
"Y/N? Are you there?"
"Yes, yeah, yeah! Sorry– I mean, thanks– Thank you, Uncle."
"Anytime, Kiddo. Just don't get heartbroken."
I chuckled again before cutting the call.
I still didn't sleep. I waited for the morning to come. Now that I knew we had gone to the same school, I needed to get a hold of someone from our class, and luckily, Jennie's Mom was able to help me with it.
She told me the place where Jennie stayed during those years... the daughter of the owners was Jennie's classmate. I had to lie to her that I was planning some kind of surprise for Jennie... but I got the girl's number.
However, I couldn't get a hold of her for two days.
Finally, the day before Jennie was supposed to come back — somehow I have been praying for that — she picked up the phone.
"Hello?" Her voice echoed on the other side of the phone.
"Hello? Is this Sophia speaking?"
"Yes? Who's this?"
"Um, my name is Y/N. I was calling to see–"
"Y/N? As in Y/N Y/L/N?"
"Uh, yeah?"
She knows me!?
"Oh, my God! Y/N! How long has it been!? How are you?" She chirped, and from her voice, I could tell that she was very excited.
"I, uh, I am good. How are you?"
"I am good as well! God! I didn't expect you to call after all these years. How come?" She asked happily. She was a very talkative person, I could say.
"Uh, I– I was actually calling you... to ask about... Jennie...?" I asked unsurely.
"Oh, of course! She must have called you as well, right? I knew she'd reach out to you when she called me."
"She called you? When was this?"
"It was a few months back. Before New Year, I guess."
"What did she say?"
"She called me to ask if I had any news about you." I hummed. "But I told her, after she moved back to Korea, you had an accident and changed schools... we weren't in contact since then."
"Yeah, yeah, right!" I mumbled.
It all connects.
"Was... was Jennie and I... close in school?"
She laughed. "Close? You guys were inseparable. Jennie used to be my best friend... then you came and snatched her away. Remember one time we even fought about it?" She questioned and laughed. I swallowed hard.
I have this very vague recollection of something like that... but I don't know.
"And you were so protective of Jennie, and she was always super jealous when someone else had your attention."
My head was starting to spin, and a sharp pain rushed through me. I was still sitting in bed, so I clutched the bedsheets hard as tears welled in my eyes.
"And when Jennie initially planned to go to Florida, you wanted to join as well. But your parents didn't want you gone. Also, Jennie kinda changed her plan to Korea at the last minute." She added.
My lips trembled as some moments started to flash in my mind.
"Plus, you guys– Y/N? Y/N? Are you there?" Her voice snapped me back.
"Yes! Yes, yeah, I, uh, I am." I gulped again. "Listen, Sophie, I gotta go now. I called to make sure that this was your number. Let's catch up sometime else. Yeah? Bye."
"Oh, sure. By–" I cut the call urgently and rushed to the bathroom for my painkillers.
'But why South Korea? You can become a singer here.'
'Why can't you understand, Y/N? I need to be able to spread my wings and follow my dreams.'
'What about me? Where do I stand in your life?'
'Y/N! We are just fourteen. This is just a passing infatuation. We need to learn to move on.'
'You are not just a passing infatuation to me. Can't you see how much I love you?'
'I am leaving tonight, Y/N. Forget about me.'
'I won't. I can't.'
I remember.
I remember everything now.
It was Jennie. It was Jennie all along.
