Chapter 12: Hard Past

Trigger Warning: This chapter may contain mentions of emotional and mental abuse. Please read this chapter with caution.

DogDay sighed as he scratched the back of his head.

“I can't believe I won that.” He said, “In 3 turns.”

CatNap ran over to DogDay.

“Wow, that was surprising.” He said, “In less than 3 turns, you won the duel. Did luck favor you tonight?”

“Probably…” DogDay replied,

“HEY!” Hoppy shouted, “I AIN'T DONE WITH YOU!”

DogDay turned around, only for Hoppy to grab him by the shirt as she then raised a fist in the air.

“M-Meep!” DogDay shouted in fear,

“You just got lucky that you won!” Hoppy shouted with anger, “The next time we duel, I WILL make sure that luck favors me!”

Hoppy then drops DogDay to the ground as she crosses her arms.

“I'll see you both at the tournament.” She said, “And if you don't wanna come, then you two are nothing but wusses.”

Hoppy looked at everyone else.

“PARTY'S OVER!” She hollered, “GO HOME!”

Hoppy walked away alongside the other critters invited. KickinChicken chuckled as he slowly clapped his hands.

“Well, looks like you made her angry.” He said, “Now you two are gonna regret crossing the bridge that Hoppy lived under.”

KickinChicken turned away from CatNap and DogDay.

“Like her, I'll be seeing you two at the tournament as well.” He said, “Be there, or get squared or however you say it.”

KickinChicken walked away. CatNap got DogDay up.

“Are you ok?” He asked him,

“Yeah, thanks…” DogDay replied as he sadly sighed, “Come on, let's get out of here before they suspect us.”

“Yeah, let's do that.”

As they left the home, DogDay looked at the moon above as it was slowly appearing after the sunset.

“...I think it's time I tell you about why I'm almost a punching bag…” He said to CatNap, “Or how I used to be one…”

“Oh?” CatNap wondered, “Go on.”

DogDay sighed as if he had a rough day.

“Before he died from a fatal car crash… My father used to tell me that the sky's the limit…” He said, “He and I had a strong bond together. It's like we really do care for each other.”

“And he's also been friendly with me ever since you and I were about to graduate middle school together.” CatNap said,

“Yeah… He knows how much you and I mean to each other…”

“Why are you telling me this all of a sudden?”

DogDay sighed again.

“Sometimes, I always think about… how my mom treated me after my dad died…” He said, “2 years of emotional and mental abuse from someone that I thought I would share a bond with as well…”

DogDay sniffed as if he was about to cry.

“She always said harsh words to me…” He said, “And I tried to fight back, but she made the words worse…”

DogDay had a tear coming down from his eye.

“The last straw was when she tried to attack me with her even more harsh words while she was over…” He said,

“She?” CatNap wondered,

“...CraftyCorn… CraftyCorn made sure that I isolate myself from my mom… But when I moved away to a new apartment where you and I would share, her harsh words would always come back to me… And worse, she disowned me and wished me death the same way my father did…”

DogDay started to break down into tears.

“I miss him…” He said, “And also CraftyCorn… Why did my mother change?”

CatNap got a bit emotional as he comforted DogDay with a hug.

“...I never knew my parents…” CatNap said, “I was an orphan… I was the odd one there… Something was wrong with me… They put me on medications and it worked, but ever since CraftyCorn sacrificed herself, I'm back to being an odd feline…”

DogDay sniffed.

“Life sucks sometimes, doesn't it?” He wondered,

“Pfft, of course it sucks!” CatNap replied, “But I still have someone supporting me, and that's you.”

DogDay chuckled.

“That's true…” He said, “Even though family was hell for me, I still got friends with me!”

DogDay wrapped his arm around CatNap and gave him a noogie.

“And that includes you, buddy!” He said,

“Heh, yup, we've been best friends since kids.” CatNap said, “And I'm surprised that our relationship is still going.”

DogDay then yawned.

“Man… I need some sleep before the weekend starts.” He said as he turned to CatNap, “Here, let's head home and go straight to bed.”

“Yeah, please, I need some sleep.” CatNap said,

The two then head back home together.
