The soft sound of rain could be heard against the beautiful stained glass windows of the great hall. All of the first years had been settled near the front, ready to be assigned their houses. Maggie could feel the sweat accumulating in her palms as more and more students were being called up. Sirius, Remus, and Peter had already been called up, all of them being placed in Gryffindor. She was happy that the boys had been placed together, seeing them cheer and embrace each other, even though they had only met each other that day she knew that they at least would have each other.

Achilles on the other hand had been placed in Ravenclaw, they both had expected it to be fair, and he happily strode over to the table, excitedly welcomed by his new fellow Ravenclaws.

As Peter took his seat at the Gryffindor table, she turned her head to look over at her brother to see if he seemed as anxious as she was. Surprisingly she saw her brother standing there with his classic bright smile plastered across his face, he had lost a tooth over the summer and she couldn't help but find humour in the small gap in his normally perfect smirk. It gave her a sense of peace knowing her brother could be so relaxed.

"James Potter!", Professor McGonagalls' voice called out. Her brother excitedly made his way up to the front of the Great Hall. As he took his seat on the stool he made eye contact with Maggie, his smile only getting bigger as the Sorting Hat was placed on top of his head.

"Gryffindor!" The sorting hat shouted throughout the room, she didn't know if James' face could get any brighter but it somehow managed to when his house was assigned. He quickly ran over to his table, happily being embraced by the rest of his house.

"Margaret Potter!" While watching James she seemed to have forgotten she was next. Thickly swallowing the lump in her throat she made her way to the stool. Her mind raced as she contemplated what house she would be placed in. She knew it shouldn't matter but she couldn't help but worry about being alone. In Gryffindor, she'd have her brother and his newfound companions, but she knew she probably wouldn't be placed there, her brother was always the braver and more outgoing one. Her final hope was Ravenclaw, Achilles and her family had always mentioned that they knew she would be placed there, her love for books and astronomy only strengthening their theories.

As the old raggedy hat was placed atop her head she took a deep breath, the hat began stalking except it seemed to be talking to her. Almost like it was in her mind?

"Another Potter.. Hmmm... How peculiar.. You don't seem to be a Gtyffindor like your father and brother... Perhaps a Ravenclaw like your mother..? You'd like that, wouldn't you..? But no, not quite right...Maybe a Slytherin..."

Margaret could feel her heart speed up and her palms began to sweat again, she never had anything against Slytherins specifically, but she knew of her family's hatred for them. She always believed each person was their own, and it wasn't helpful to generalize individuals based on things they could not control. Still, her nerves peeked at the thought of being placed in such a hated house. The hat stayed quiet for a second, almost as if it was thinking or deciding where to place her, only making her nerves worse.

"... Not quite right... Let it be... HUFFLEPUFF!"

The entire Hufflepuff table burst into cheers at another person joining their house, Maggie felt a sense of relief and a weight taken off her shoulders as her house was announced. A small smile spread across her delicate lips, her eyes scanning for her brother to see his reaction as she stood up and headed over to a seat that had been opened for her.

Once her eyes finally landed on him her smile faltered, he was completely distracted goofing off with some animal Peter had brought from home. He and Sirius were trying to transform it into something she could not figure out while Peter watched intently, worrying about it but not wanting to seem overprotective and ruin the two boys' fun.

He hadn't even watched her. Maybe he was just overly excited, he did just get sorted into the house he had been dreaming of since they were children she told herself. But she couldn't help but feel a small pang in her heart.

Before she could be upset about it any longer, she was quickly distracted by the figure sitting next to Peter. Her eyes locked with Remus' a smile spread across his scared face, she smiled back before he gave her a small thumbs up. He had actually watched her sorting and he almost seemed proud or happy for her, even though they had just met. She mouthed back a quiet "Thank you" before an older brunette girl sitting next to her began talking.

The Hufflepuff common room was a lot warmer and more welcoming than Maggie expected. Yeah, it was common knowledge that Hufflepuffs were the sweethearts of Hogwarts but she still didn't think everyone would be so kind. Amos, the head boy, had shown all of the first years around the school doing his best to make sure no one got lost, before showing everyone to the common room, the entrance which was hidden behind some barrels near the entrance to the kitchen.

Maggie settled into her dorm along with her dormmates, a tall blonde named Meredith, a green-eyed girl named Tallulah, and a small raven-haired girl named Carly. They were all relatively nice, Meredith had complemented her hair and mentioned having makeovers with each other when Maggie mentioned never having straightened her hair. She wasn't too fond of the idea but still agreed hoping that day would not come soon.

As she lay in bed, a couple of posters posted on her walls and her trunk still half full, she stared at the ceiling. The moonlight was shining through the small window at the top of her wall, she wasn't looking forward to having such little sunlight down in the basement, but she couldn't overlook how cozy the dorms felt. Her mind slipped towards today's events, a lot had happened, meeting the boys, seeing Achilles again, being placed in a house away from her brother and best friend.

Maggie couldn't help but be a little upset at the fact that she would be staying away from her brother. She was so used to having James only a couple of doors down, being able to sneak into his room in the middle of the night after a bad dream or to sneak leftover cake their mother had prepared the night before. Potter Manor was a pretty large building, but they never lived more than a hallway away, now her brother was sleeping on the opposite side of the castle, in a room full of new friends. She only hoped they would share enough classes that she wouldn't grow too distant from him in the years to come. She turned on her side trying to find a more comfortable position to sleep in, she wouldn't worry about that for now.

Her and James grow apart?

Never.

Not in a million years.
