IX - WE BECOME BULL FIGHTERS

PERCY'S MORNING STARTED REALLY STRANGE.

He had this super weird dream about Grover in a bridal boutique (which he really hoped was not some subconscious fantasy of his). His friend was being chased through a storm by what he figured was a creature in Florida, but for all he knew, it could have just been a local.

Then, he woke up.

"Percy, you're going to be late!" his mom, Sally Jackson, called. He sighed. No monster. No Grover. No Florida. It was all a dream.

His eyes caught a shadow against his bedroom window where the light was pouring in. He furrowed his brows but just as quickly as it came, it was gone.

"Come on, dear!" Percy's mom called again. "Last day of school. You should be excited! You've almost made it."

"Coming," Percy mumbled as he got up.

He reached under his pillow and felt for Riptide. He decided not to uncap it since his mom had a strict no-deadly-weapons-in-the-house rule. He sat the pen on his nightstand and got dressed.

He thought about what Grover said in his dream: "Have to get away! Have to warn them!" Percy made a gesture for warding off evil just in case.

He shouldn't be thinking about this. He should be thinking about how today was his first ever planned last day of school and tomorrow he would be at Camp Half-Blood.

Percy found his mom wearing her Sweet on America uniform serving blue waffles and blue eggs. Blue food was kind of their thing for celebrations.

"Percy, are you all right?" she asked, noticing he wasn't really enjoying his food.

"Yeah...fine."

She didn't buy it. She sat down across from him and asked, "School, or..."

"I think Grover's in trouble," he said before telling her about his dream.

His mom pursed her lips in thought, not really experienced in this aspect of Percy's life. "I wouldn't be too worried, dear. Grover is a big satyr now. If there were a problem, I'm sure we would've heard from...from camp...."

"What is it?" Percy asked, sensing something in her tone.

"Nothing," she said. "I'll tell you what. This afternoon we'll celebrate the end of school. I'll take you and Tyson to Rockefeller Center—to that skateboard shop you like."

Percy almost smiled. See, they weren't exactly rich. A trip to the skateboard shop sounded like a dream. But then he remembered something.

"Wait a minute," he said. "I thought we were packing me up for camp tonight."

She sighed. "Ah, dear, about that...I got a message from Chiron last night."

Percy felt his heart drop all the way to his feet. "What did he say?"

"He thinks...it might not be safe for you to come to camp just yet. We might have to postpone."

"Postpone? Mom, how could it not be safe? I'm a half-blood! It's like the only safe place on earth for me!"

"Usually, dear. But with the problems they're having— "
