No - please don't take me back there!
Their shrieks rang through the halls
As he dragged them by the heels
To a room in the basement,
Kicking and screaming the whole way.
With a shove and the click of a lock
Sliding into place,
Their fate was sealed
For the next year and a day.
Their eyes drew downcast
And their bones became heavy,
One false move would
Have the higher power in a tizzy;
Move along and play the role,
Create a makeshift part,
Kill yourself -
Kill your heart -
Put your truth on leave -
Because truth isn't what we do here:
We think with our heads,
Our hearts hidden
Up our sleeves.
Out in the din, a ghost of a voice
Could be heard,
"You knew you'd come back,
why did you try so hard to fight it?"
It's not like I want to do this again,
Looking at the hands they so desperately
Wanted to be different,
"That's not what you want...
It's not who we are.
I've been here the whole time,
Just let me come into the light."
They looked into his eyes,
Soft and kind,
With dreams that fill the sky,
"Let me out into the light."
So the girl they'd been forced to become
Stepped aside
When they let their heart
Out into the light;
The boy with short, messy brown hair,
And soft eyes,
Stepped outside
For the very first time;
Slowly but surely
Things became a little lighter -
Once everyone began to understand
Nothing can happen overnight -
With the right people
And your heart finally cage free,
The din of bad times
Can finally begin to recede.
