Coming home was the calmest moment of my day. Hanging out with my own company was the best thing I had.
To tell the truth, I never had friends. My mother worked as a doctor who had to change cities or even countries, as she was very professional and several hospitals called her. So, I always resigned myself to the fact that having friends wouldn't be very good for me, since I would miss them when I left them.
I was born in China, more specifically in Shanghai. I've lived in France, Canada, South Korea and now we're in Washington. I don't know how long we'll be here, but I think I'll be able to finish my third year here.
I turned the corner, already seeing my house. I wasn't rich, but if someone saw my house they would think otherwise.
I went in, took off my sneakers and put on my flip-flops. And as usual, there was no one at home.
I went to my room, put my backpack away and went to take a shower. After leaving the bathroom, I put on comfortable clothes and went down to have lunch.
I made some noodles and sat on the couch. I turned on the TV and stopped at the channel where a K-drama was playing.
In the scene there was a boy pulling the protagonist's hand. Suddenly, another guy appeared and pulled the boy away.
That's when I remembered Erix. Why did he bother telling Adrian to let go of my hand? And why did Adrian seem afraid of Erix?
ㅡArg.ㅡ I put the rest of the noodles in my mouth and got up to put the plate in the sink.
...
Waking up to the sound of the alarm clock made me want to kick it away. I hated that touch, but I didn't want to change it.
I took a shower and put on my uniform. I combed my hair and decided to leave it loose. I left the room and went to the kitchen.
ㅡGood morning, Faye.ㅡTo my surprise, my mother was still at home. She usually left before I woke up.
ㅡGood morning, ma.ㅡI yawned and dragged the chair back so I could sit down. ㅡ What good are you doing there?
ㅡBaoziㅡ said and brought a plate with some steamed buns.
I adjusted the chopsticks in my hand and picked up a baozi. I closed my eyes as I took the first bite, remembering something that was already buried in my memories.
Eleven years ago...
ㅡ Ba, can we eat Baozi today? ㅡ Ask and waited for your answer, hopefully.
ㅡHmm...ㅡPretended to think.ㅡ We can! ㅡ He smiled and I hugged him, happy.
ㅡ Will you buy Baozi for me tomorrow too? ㅡ I stopped in front of him and looked into his eyes, which even though they looked tired, had a charming shine.
ㅡ Yes, I will buy it, Faye.ㅡ He nodded.
ㅡPromise?ㅡI opened another smile.
ㅡI promise.ㅡHe smiled too.
I opened my eyes. He didn't keep that promise.
I felt my eyes burn, but I held on. I couldn't start crying around my mother. That had happened a long time ago, I didn't want to bring up that memory again.
After eating and brushing my teeth, I found my sneakers, grabbed my backpack, my cell phone and left the house. It was just another day. June was a bit hot around here, and that day it seemed like it wanted to rain. There were some dark clouds in the sky, which covered the sun and made the weather a little dark.
I was almost at school when that same car passed by. He stopped in the school parking lot and a person came out of it.
ㅡErix...? ㅡI made a face. ㅡSo he was the one... Oh, damn!ㅡI hit my forehead, feeling embarrassed because Erix saw me begging a dog to have mercy on me, in the middle of the street.
Hence the "you're welcome".
He looked at me and gave a small smile. I covered half my face with my hair and almost ran into the school.
When I arrived in my room, I sat in my seat and kept my head down, pretending I didn't exist.
It would be cool if this actually worked.
ㅡI think that dog just wanted affectionㅡhe whispered in a hoarse voice.
I put my hands over my face, feeling my cheeks burn. But I took them off to look at him with an angry frown.
The history teacher entered the room and placed his thick books on the table. Those books seemed to serve as decorations, since Mr. Green never opened them. At least since I got here I never saw him opening them.
ㅡGood morning, everyone. You're tired, aren't you?ㅡYour question caused murmurs to echo around the room.ㅡI am too. But nothing that a history lesson can't solve.
That sentence didn't make any sense.
I opened the notebook and started to copy what he wrote on the board. The text was getting big, covering the entire board in doctor-like handwriting. Despite understanding, my vision was exhausted with so much effort.
I sighed, already feeling my hand hurt. I hated copying large texts, as I thought it was unnecessary. I was sure I wouldn't use even half of that to take the test.
ㅡErix, this is my number. ㅡI heard Zara's voice.ㅡIf you need anything, just call me.
I looked back surreptitiously and held back a laugh when I noticed that Erix suppressed a grimace. He looked at me making me freeze.
ㅡ Of course, wait for my call ㅡ he spoke slowly, still staring at me. Zara smiled excitedly and returned to her seat.
I was only able to move when the sound of the bell woke me up. I turned forward, feeling my heart racing.
That class was vacant, so I took out my cell phone and started scrolling through Instagram. There was nothing interesting and my finger was already getting hot from scrolling through the screen. I left Instagram and put it on the music app. I took my phone out of my backpack and connected it to my cell phone. I pressed play on shuffle and closed my eyes when the first song played.
And that's what I used to do in vacant classes. Since I didn't have any friends to talk to, music was my only company.
Well, that was before that being appeared.
Erix took one side of my phone and left the room.
I got up and started running after him.
