Chapter 8: Rose

Dylan's over at Caroline's house in her room as Caroline tells her that Tyler's a werewolf. Caroline says, "So Sarah attacks Tyler and he pushed her away and she tripped and she fell and she hit her head." Dylan says, "Does Matt remember anything?" Caroline says, "Uh-h, he thinks he blacked out. But I think, I think they were both compelled by Katherine. That's why I covered for Tyler and said it was an accident." Dylan says, "Yeah, I don't understand that. Guy's a tool." Caroline says, "Well, gee, duh, Tyler getting blamed for Sarah's death just opens up questions that he can't answer. And do you really think it's a good idea for him to tell his mom he's a werewolf?" Dylan says, "Obviously not." Caroline says, "And that Werewolf Road leads straight to Vampire Boulevard. I thought I was thinking fast on my feet." Dylan says, "Where's your mom?" Caroline says, "Leading the search party for Aimee Bradley. They haven't found her body yet." Dylan says, "Oh, trends today and their underage drinking. Tragic. Wait. Did you see Tyler's eyes turn yellow?" Caroline says, "They're more gold with amber highlights. Can he turn into a wolf now?" Dylan says, "Only on a full moon. Now he has increased strength and who knows what else? I wonder how much Mason told him. Does he know about us?" Caroline's busy on her phone as Dylan says, "Hello? What'd you tell him?" Caroline looks up at Dylan and says, "Nothing, really, I... I don't think he knows much of anything. He seemed really freaked out, and, honestly I felt kind of bad for him." Caroline walks past Dylan as Dylan follows behind Caroline and says, "He's gotta know something." Caroline says, "Alright. I'll ask him." Dylan speeds in front of Caroline grabbing her wrist tightly as she says, "No, you won't, Caroline. He cannot know about us. A bite from a werewolf can kill a vampire so don't be his friend, do you understand me?" Caroline says, "I understand. I'm late for school." Dylan lets go of Caroline and says, "Right. If you wanna drop the hint to your mom that Aimee's body's at the bottom of a ravine with a cracked spine, might save your mom some time." Dylan opens the door and nods her head for Caroline to go. Caroline walks out the door with Dylan following behind as she closes the door. Later, Dylan's at the high school in the parking lot with Stefan. Elena's missing. Stefan says, "This has Katherine written all over it." Dylan says, "Katherine's in the tomb. Trust me. I'm the one that shut her in." Stefan says, "Did you?" Dylan says, "Did I what, Stefan?" Stefan says, "Well, I know the hold Katherine has on you." Dylan says, "She's in the tomb. Period. End of story. Although she did say something to me right before I shut her in. I thought she was lying." Stefan says, "What did she say?" Dylan says, "Elena's in danger." Stefan says, "What? You didn't think you should ask her to elaborate?" Dylan says, "Everything she says is a lie. How am I supposed to know, she's gonna start spouting out the truth." Stefan says, "We have to go talk to her." Dylan says, "Yeah, that's not a good idea. You wanna know why? Because we're gonna go ask her for help she's gonna negotiate a release which you're gonna be dumb enough to give her and then she's gonna get out and kill us. It's exactly what she wants." Stefan starts walking away as he says, "I don't really care." Dylan says, "It's a a bad idea, Stefan." Stefan says, "It's Elena." Stefan walks away and Dylan sighs. Later, Dylan's in the school using her vampire hearing to find Stefan as she hears Jeremy say, "I'm not gonna sit here. What if she's hurt, okay? Or worse, what if she's..." Stefan says, "She's not. You two go back to your house, just in case. I'm gonna call you the minute I find her." Jeremy says, "Well, you can't do this alone." The door opens and Dylan walks in and says, "He's not. Let's go." Stefan looks at Dylan and says, "You're coming with me?" Dylan says, "It's Elena." Later, the Salvatore are in Dylan's car driving to where Elena is. Stefan's messing with some of Alaric's weapons. Dylan says, "Alaric sure likes his weapons. What the fuck is that?" Stefan says, "Well, it's a vervain bomb or a grenade launcher or something like that." Dylan says, "Cool, I guess." Stefan says, "Hey, how much further is it?" Dylan says, "About 80 miles." Stefan says, "Who do you think took her?" Dylan says, "Someone from Katherine's past. She said she was running from someone. Maybe got the wrong girl." Stefan says, "Thank you. For helping me." Dylan softly smiles and says, "Of course. Like I said at the dance, I got your back no matter what." Stefan nods and says, "Yeah." About an hour later, Stefan says, "Getting close, Jeremy said there's a, an access road just past mile marker six." Dylan reaches behind her in her open purse full of blood bags and grabs one. Dylan rips open the bag with her teeth as she drinks it while keeping one hand on the steering wheel. Dylan can feel Stefan staring at her as she says, "If you want some, just ask." Stefan says, "I want some." Dylan hands over the blood to Stefan as Stefan takes a little sip handing the bag over to Dylan. Dylan says, "Does Elena know you're drinking human blood?" Stefan smiles and says, "Yes, she knows. I've been drinking hers. I've been drinking a little every day. Been slowly increasing my intake and building up my strength." Dylan says, "How interesting and romantic. Since we're road-trip bonding remember the days when all you lived for was blood? You were the guy that would rip someone apart just for the fun of it?" Stefan says, "You mean when I was more like you?" Dylan says, "Yes. Stefan, exactly. Back when you put blood into me so I could be a big, bad vampire. Wonder if Elena would be so quick to open her veins to that guy. By the way, what happened to that guy? He was a hoot." Stefan says, "Guess he found something else to live for." Later, they arrive at Elena's location and get out of the car. Stefan grabs Alaric's bag of weapons as Dylan says, "The house should be just beyond those trees. Wait, now, I've got more experience than you do with this sort of thing." Stefan says, "So, what's your point?" Dylan says, "My point is whoever has Elena is probably, who was after Katherine in 1864 and before that." Stefan says, "And?" Dylan says, "And it puts them at 500 years old and strong. You sure you wanna do this?" Stefan says, "Yeah, I'm certain I wanna do it." Dylan says, "'Cause we go in that house we may not come back out." Stefan says, "Alright, then I won't come out." Dylan softly smiles and says, "So noble, Stefan." Stefan scoffs and says, "I can't think of a better reason to die. But you wanna stay here, I'll totally understand." As Stefan walks away, Dylan follows after him and says, "Like hell I'm staying here." Later, Stefan and Dylan walk into the house and they split up. Stefan speeds upstairs as he looks at the vampire that took Elena and says, "Up here." Dylan's downstairs and she says, "Down here." Stefan then shoots at stake at the vampire and he grabs Elena and he spends them away into a corner. While Dylan grabs the girl that was with Elena and hides behind a wall with her hand covering her mouth to quiet her. The male vampire says, "Excuse me. To whom it may concern. You're making a grave mistake if you think you can beat me. You can't. You hear that? I repeat, you cannot beat me. So, I want the girl on the count of three. Or heads will roll. Do we understand each other?" Elena appears at the top of the stairs, and she says, "I'll come with you. Just please don't hurt my friends. They just wanted to help me out." The vampire speeds up where Elena is and he says, "What game are you playing with me?" Elena throws a vervain grenade at the vampire, and he screams. As the vampire goes to Elena, Stefan appears and starts shooting the vampire with stakes and he's not going down, so Stefan pushes him down the stairs and they both roll down. The vampire stands up and then Dylan comes and stakes the vampire through his heart, and he desiccates. Dylan looks over at the female vampire and she speeds away. As Dylan goes after her, Elena says, "Just let her go." Elena smiles with relief at seeing Stefan and she runs down the stairs and into his arms while Stefan says, "You hurt? You, okay?" Elena nods and says, "I'm okay." Elena looks at Dylan over Stefan's shoulder and she mouths, "Thank you." Dylan nods with a soft smile. Later, Dylan's home in the living room pouring herself a glass of bourbon when Stefan walks in. Dylan says, "Where's Elena?" Stefan says, "She's home." Dylan says, "And you're here why?" Stefan says, "'Cause she wanted to be with Jeremy." Dylan hands Stefan the glass she just poured as she says, "Here." Stefan says, "Thanks. Listen, uh, what Rose told Elena about the curse..." Dylan says, "I know. We'll keep her safe." Stefan says, "Yeah." As Dylan walks away, Stefan says, "Hey." Dylan looks over at Stefan and says, "What?" Stefan says, "I'm sorry." Dylan says, "For what?" Stefan says, "For being the guy who made you turn 145 years ago." Dylan says, "We don't need to rehash that." Stefan says, "Well, you know what? I've never said it out loud. I guess I just need to say it and you need to hear it. I'm sorry. What I did was selfish. I didn't want to be alone. Guess I just needed my sister." Stefan nods and walks away. Later, Dylan's in Elena's room sitting on her bay window with Elena's necklace in her hands. Elena walks in and Dylan says, "Cute pj's." Elena says, "I'm tired, Dylan." Dylan stands up as she walks up to Elena holding up her necklace she says, "Brought you this." Elena says, "I thought that was gone. Thank you." As Elena goes to grab it, Dylan pulls it away as Elena says, "Please give it back." Dylan says, "I just have to say something." Elena says, "Why do you have to say it with my necklace?" Dylan says, "Well, because what I'm about to say is probably the most selfish thing I've ever said in my life." Elena says, "Dylan, don't go there." Dylan steps closer to Elena as she says, "No, I just have to say it once. You just need to hear it. I love you, Elena. And it's because I love you that I can't be selfish with you. And why you can't know this. I don't deserve you. But my brother does." Dylan kisses Elena's cheek as she rubs her thumb against Elena's cheek and softly says, "God, I wish you didn't have to forget this. But you do." Dylan compels Elena to forget just as a tear rolls down Dylan's eye and then she disappears but not before putting the necklace on Elena.
