Mariah, Toye, Cobb, and a few other paratroopers were in a group together; they were waiting to get on trucks that would take them to the train station. Then they would be boarding a boat to take them to Europe.
"You gotta admit, he's got no chance. Either the Kruats will get him, or one of us." Cobb said.
"Who, Sobel?" Liebgott asked, joining the conversation. During one of their training exercises last week Sobel got confused as to where he thought the company should be. He had Easy leave their trench where they were immediately "killed" by the enemy. On the plus side, however; the medics got put some of what they had been learning to use. Three men were left behind "injured." and the medics practiced wrapping and packing wounds.
"He screwed up one maneuver." Shifty said.
"Well, you know I'm always fumbling with grenades, be easy if one went off by accident you know." Joe said.
"Well, they must have put him in charge for a reason." One of the men said.
"Cause the army can't make a mistake." Mariah said. As they were talking, they noticed Lipton walk by then stop to look at them. They all put their heads down and went quiet.

Once onboard the group split up. Mariah looked around the train and found Eugene sitting by himself.
"Mind if I sit?" Mariah asked.
"Not at all," Eugene said, moving his feet off the seat in front of him.
"Thanks," Mariah smiled, sitting across from the medic.
"Excited to go to Europe?" Mariah asked.
"Yes ma'am, it should be interesting. How about you?"
"Since when have you called me ma'am, Eugene? But yes, I am."
"I just hope Sobel can keep it together when we get there. Although, I wouldn't be so sad to see him gone." Eugene leaned back in his seat.
"Eugene Roe! Do my ears deceive me or are you bad mouthing someone? A nice southern boy like you?" Mariah said.
"Oh hush. You dislike the man as much as I do Mariah; You want him gone just as much as me." Mariah could not deny it, she would be over the moon if Sobel was gone.
"I suppose you have a point." Mariah agreed.
"I know I do." The rest of the train ride was spent eating, swapping stories from their childhoods, and telling jokes.
From where he was sitting Liebgott could not help but notice the smile that had been on Mariah's face since she sat down. While he loved watching her smile, he was jealous it was Eugene doing it and not him.
"Earth to Joseph, are you even listening to us?" Perconte asked.
"He's not. He's too busy eyeing Mariah." Bull said.
"Shut up," Liebgott mumbled, leaning back into seat.

Everyone gathered on the deck of the ship to watch it pass the Statue of Liberty. As it did, everyone stared with a mixture of awe and sadness. None of them were sure when the next time they were going to touch American soil again.
A few minutes later everyone went downstairs to get a bed. Mariah tried to make her way through the crowd of men; but with being 5'3 and carrying a large bag it was a struggle. She felt a hand grab hers; It was Eugene.
